scared about soft adnexal cyst on ovary

I just returned from my OBGYN and I am pretty scared.  The past few months I have noticed slight pressure in the lower back and just recently pain in my lowerleft pelvic area.  I have had many benign cysts in my life during pregnancy that resolved themselves, but this one seems different.  She said something was deffintiely there and wanted an ultrasound within one week.  No wait and see or anything.  She did mention it was soft and moveable, but had to be at least 4 cm. I told her I was scared due to my enlarged nodes, but she did not say much and just left the room.  That makes me think something"bigger" is going on. I guess if it was "horrible" they would have ordered a STAT ultrasound.   I am scared because I havealso had some slight swollen glands in my nek for 4 months that no one can figure out.  Now I am thinking worse case scenario-Cancer.  I am only 40 with three young kids... this would devaste our world.  I know that cancer usually does not present pain until late stage, so I am even more concerned.  She mentioned it was an adenxal cyst.  Are these often benign?  Any input would be great.  I am scheduled for an U/S on the 21st after my next period, but the waiting is going to kill me.

As Trudie said, most are benign...I had a "mass" on an ovary...had a pelvic sono, then a trans-vaginal us...showed the mass was "solid"...needless to say I was in quite a "panic"...as I had numerous other issues...and hubby and I were finished having children...best thing for me was a total hysterectomy incl. removing both ovaries...at the time my Dr. said she would have to do an open abdominal surgery and for sure take the one ovary as we did not know what "it" was...so, together we decided to take "it all" ( I did not want to have to go thru any of it again). My surgery went fine...the mass was solid, calcified...and benign!! So, I can totally relate to the waiting and the "what ifs"...and it is easier said than done, but hope you can relax, and take a breath...and let us know how it all turns out...by the way I was 40 yrs old at the time of my hysterectomy...
Take Care,

Over 95% are benign but it is good she is moving things along at a good rate.  The waiting is exrutiating but try and relax and do keep us posted on how it goes.
