surgery or wait?

Hi guys I am 20 years old and  i am fairly new to this board i have been watching it for quiet some time bur have not been really active until today. Monday night i went to the hospital with sever/ moderate pain on my left hand side, It had been going on for about a day and a half and i couldn't take it anymore i waited there in agony for 9 hours to be told i had a bladder infection and was given medicine for that. Just before i was leaving the doctor ( who obviously was to busy to take the time to consider other reasons for my pain) mention ohh i could be something to do with your reproductive organs as well. I already had to wait 48 hours to find out if i also had a kidney infection, so he scheduled me for an ultrasound for 48 hours after that day with a follow up in the ER. After my ultrasound it was discovered that i had and 8.5 cm x 7.35 cm cyst on my left ovary and ontop of that i had a kidney infection (this being wednesday) I am now scheduled with and OB/Gyn in a few hours. I am a little nervous as to how rushed they are making this has anyone else had this much of a rushed experience they never mentioned anything about cancer but this is my first time dealing with this situation. My aunt at my age had the same sort of thing and lost part of her ovary to it. I am wondering also will they rush me into surgery i mean i am still in pain and was perscribed Tylenol 3 from the ER doctor that day after my ultrasound. I Have been taking it with a little releif but not complete has anyone delt with something like that where pain medication hasn't worked? I am really nervous and the worst part is because my university is out all my friends have gone home to there home towns and the closest person to me is an hour and a half away so i am facing this on my own. Thanks for taking the time to read my nervous rant any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys so i had my sugery this past surgery the originally attempted to do the surgery  laproscopically but unfortunitly the worse case senario had come true and the cyst had twisted making it a more complicated surgery and therefore the laprocopic surgery was aborted and a full laporotomy (can't remember how it is spell :$ ) had to be preformed i had to spend 4 days in the hospital and was on iv fluids for 2 of those days. I have a small incision from the laproscopic surgery in my belly button and then a large incision along my bikini line with 21 staples. Unfortunitly the day after i returned home i.e. a few hours ago i have noticed a rash forming around my incision site so i am giving it the night to go away and if it is no better in the morning of the the ER i go to get a doctor to check it out. (will give an update on that when or if i go) as for pain it has been pretty annoying to say the least not being able to laugh has been the hardest!!! but i think i am managing and am trying to keep my spirits up thanks for all your support!

I was having pain for several weeks before seeking the advice of a doctor at a walk-in clinic. That was exactly one week ago. Since my period was late, and the preganancy test was negative, he blamed PMS and sent me home with Baralgin. He advised that I wait a week, and if no AF, then he would investigate further. Thank God, I was able to see a real gyneacologist on Monday. He immediately did a scan in his office and discovered a 4cm cyst on one ovary and 1.5cm cyst on another. The pain is so bad that I have not been able to go to work this week. I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, and a bit nervous. I have a little over three days to wait, and Panadeine F for the pain, which barely takes the edge off. I'm just glad that I am not alone in this.

I am glad that the gynecologist isn't going to wait.  I will say a prayer for you tonight.  When you feel up to it, please come here and let us know how you are doing.  Try to relax and know that by this time tomorrow it will be over and you will be on your way to recovery.  Sending hugs and prayers your way.

After my appointment today they scheduled me for an "emergency surgery" the doctor who originally diagnosed me with an ovarian cyst wanted to wait 6 weeks and continue monitoring it during that time. Today the OBGYN told me that i am at a high risk for the the size of the cyst to cause tortion so they want to remove ASAP so that i do not loose my whole ovary. So tomorrow I am supposed to be at the hosptial for 8:30 am and the surgery is scheduled for 10:30 am. They are going to attempt to remove it laproscopically but i have been warned that they may need to do a more invasive procedure to remove the cyst depending on what they find while they are in there.

Good Morning,
Well I had a very similer experience my cyst was 7.5x3x2.5 for me the only thing that helped with the pain was a combination of an anti inflammitory and a demerol.  Mostly is knocked me out, I could hardly walk,  I went in on the Monday, Saw the OBGYN on Wednesday and had surgery on the Friday.  In my case they drained the cyst which was blood filled, some are just fluid fille, some are tissue.  The surgery is laproscopicly done, three little holes.  Even though I had surgery coming out of the surgery I had even less pain then when I went in.  Check your options, but if it is debillitating you be honest with the OBGYN  Good Luck

It doesn't seem to me as if they are rushing.  It sounds to me like the ER doctor is trying to cover his butt. It sounds like he was kinda lax when you went to the ER the other day.  I know that if I need an ultrasound my doctor tries to get me in the same day.  Maybe he was just doing the same thing. Sometimes pain meds just take the edge off of out pain instead of taking it away all together.  You could ask your gynecologist for something a bit stronger when  you go see her.  It is possible that you could lose your ovary, but again that is something you need to talk to the gynecologist about.  It depends on where the cyst is on the ovary or in the ovary, if it is wrapped around the ovary.  It may be impossible for her to to tell until she sees the ovary.  I can't imagine going through this alone.  I think you will find the support that you need here.  We can't be with you, but we can think about you and pray for you.  Good luck today.  Let us know what you find out.
