ultra sound shows an extremely large mass in pelvic area

I have a huge ovarian neoplasm in my pelvic area 23 cm and wonder does this size definitely mean cancer?  If so, does the size also mean that it likely traveled and/or metastisized?

Hi all -
Thank you so much for your comments.  It's been 3 weeks since surgery and I'm feeling so much better.  Luckily during the surgery the tumor showed benign cells in the frozen section, so the surgeon only took the tumor, ovaries and fallopians... leaving my uterus in tact.  I just received the final pathology and it turns out that there were some "abnormal cells" but no malignancy - so a fairly good report.  No future treatment is needed.

The tumor weighed over 15 pounds and was beach ball sized requiring an extremely large 10 inch vertical incision to remove it.  Goes from pubic area above belly button another 3 inches.  Not pretty :)  So glad that it is gone and I can go on with my life.  I feel very lucky.

Best wishes to all of you who are still awaiting your surgeries.  The relief you will feel afterwards is well worth the pain and discomfort.

Good luck to you all. My football sized tumor came out via a 4" vertical incision (below navel to bikini line). It had ruputred however so maybe they didn't need to make it so large? It's important to get them out intact incase they are cancerous and spread cancer cells around.

I went back to work after 6 weeks but I only work part time anyway. I felt really good by then but am finding this hysterectomy much worse to get over :-(

I hope this finds you feeling much better.
As much as I hate the thought of surgery, I am anxious to get it over with and put this behind me.
Can you tell me about how long it took for you to get a surgery date?  I know it depends on the doctor's schedule and the hospital.
Did they take the uterus and both overies?  My doctor says that he will be taking everything I don't need.
My cyst is 23cm, and I'm wondering if I am going to have the same size incision,
20lbs is a lot of weight that you've been carrying around.  I won't know what this thing weighs until it's over, but it although there is no pain, it is terrible uncomfortable and puts a strain on the back.
I worry about being off work for an extended amount of time.  I have no backup for my job, and I don't think there will be sufficent time to train anyone.  21 years on the job, and you have a lot of information you carry around in your head that is difficult to educate someone in a short time.  I've been telling them for years that I would be retireing one day, but they have never seen fit to cross train anyone.  I guess I shouldn't worry about it, but I'd like to return to work after surgery, and returning to a big mess wouldn't be worth it.

On June 28 I had a 30cm ovarian cyst removed via laparotomy.  My incision is about 8 inches from beside my navel down to my pubic hairline.  The cyst weighed more than 20lbs and was biopsied during surgery and again was sent for further pathology.  I just got the final path report on Thursday before I left the hospital.  Everything was benign.  I am goint to get a copy of the path report at my followup apptl  I am still very sore and swollen and cant wait to get back to normal activities.  Good luck on your surgeries and I will be thinking of you all.

I saw the gyn/onc on Thursday and am waiting for a surgery date. He didn't indicate an incision as large as the one you describe.
I know I have to wait at least a week and a half before I can have the surgery.  I dread the surgery it'self, but look forward to getting this thing out of me.

I look forward to seeing another post from you post surgery.  I hope everything goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

Thank you for your posted comment.  Like you, I do not have any pain, just look about 7 months pregnant.  Started to get a little fatigued lugging this gigantic beach ball around.  Yes surgery is needed, and I'm having it done tomorrow.  Unfortunately due to the size 25 cm, a huge incission will be made about 8 to 10 inches down the length of my stomach.  The gyn onc hopes it is an ovarian mcinous cystadenoma but said that because I'm post menapausal it would be unusual as these types of masses typically only happen in pre-menopausal women.  So there is a good chance it could be cancer.  But I am hoping I'm just a freak of a nature :)  My biggest concern if not cancer is why a total hysterectomy if not needed?  I'd advise finding a gyn onc asap as they specialize in these types of masses and have more aggressive treatment approaches should there be any cancer.  Gyn onc surgeons can improve your survival rate by as much as a year over a normal surgeon from everything that I've read.  Please let me know what happens next with your treatment.  Good luck and Best Wishes.

Thank you so much for posting more information about your similar situation to mine.  I'm sorry to hear about your rupture and the loss of your pregnancy.  But am very happy to hear that you are doing well now with no need for additional surgery or chemo.
I met with my Gyn Onc yesterday and he thinks it is an ovarian mucinous cytadenoma, 25 cm and says that it is the size of a "beach ball" OMG.  I was thinking more like a cantelope.
Tomorrow at 8AM he is doing my surgery, removal of the mass as well as a full hysterectomy.  Part of me thinks if it not cancer, then why not only take out the ovaries, fallopian tubes leaving my uterus and cervix in tact.  Obviously if it's cancerous then take anything.  Should I tell him that I don't want a complete hysterectomy?  I never had a bad cervix pap smear and my uturesus is not enlarged or abnormal.  I'm 51 and post menepausal, just think why take more than is needed if no cancer, and afraid it will negatively impact my sex life.

The symptoms I had were bloating - I was pregnant at the time so put it down to that (unfortunately lost baby 3 days before surgery), also severe stitch like pain, difficulty eating much and indigestion, excess thrist and tiredness.

Hi susankay.  The size of your cyst does NOT mean cancer.  You can have large cysts that are not cancer and you can have very small cysts that are cancer.  There is no way to tell if it is cancer or not until it is biopsied.  Do you have surgery scheduled to remove it?  Will they be doing a laprascopy or a laparotomy?  Did they tell you what kind of cyst you have?  When do you see the doctor again?  Please keep us posted on how you are doing!

Hello
I am interest in your post of 6/27.  I too have a 24 cm mass in my pelvic area discovered by ultrasound.  I had no idea.  No pain, but I look 5 or 6 mos. pregnant.  I'm 67, and I had my tubes tied many years ago.  Do you have any pain, and what symptoms are you experiencing?  Are they going to do surgery?

No, lol first they kept tellling me it was "massive" before removal about the size of a large melon. Then after op they said it filled a 2 litre kidney dish with an extra 2 litres of fluid and pus drained from me (it ruptured prior to surgery unfortunately). The lab report described as "football sized". Bizaarly I had no idea it was there and the doctor had no idea what they were removing until they opened me up. There is no evidence of anything spread it my case, although they will keep a close eye on me because of the rupture.

I've since had a hysterectomy- last week- as I have the additional but unrelated problem of abnormal cells in my cervix. I'm only 32 but luckily have 2 children already.

When do you think you might have surgery??

Thank you - Yes your response has definitely given me some much needed hope.  I'm really glad that you are doing well.  Did they weigh the football sized tumor?  Just curious :)

I had a football sized ovarian tumor, removed in April this year. It was diagnosised as only borderline malignant- meaning can treated with surgery only. There are some types of ovarian cysts that can grow really massive and be still begnin- mine was a mucinous ovarain cyst. Hope that gives you some hope.
