Oops!  I thought you were having a laparotomy.  For laproscopic surgery you may be able to start sooner but it is still a surgery and you definately want to take it slow!  Good luck!

From my own experience I would not lift anything heavier than 10 lbs for 4-6 weeks.  (But for sure follow your doctor's advice.  They may even say to wait longer.)  It really does take time for the incision to heal.  You really don't want your incision to open up.  Also, if you do too much too soon it will just take longer to recover.

The general rule is no heavy lifting of 5 pounds or more for the first two weeks and no lifting of children.  After that, a slow return to normal activity is the rule. You don't say how heavy the weights are, but common sense would say start with light weights and work your way up gradually.  If it hurts by the surgical area, STOP.  You doctor should tell you what and how much activity your body can tolerate in your post-op visit and should give you some kind of written post-op directions on what you can do week by week after surgery.
