Anyone else feel Oxycodone causes back pain?

I stopped taking my oxycodone two weeks ago, my pain is gone!  Is there anyone out there that also feel that taking oxycodone causes pain in your sipnal cord from neck to lower back.  My pain felt like someone had beat my spinal cord with a baseball bat.  I would take the oxycodone, pain would go away, until I ran out or tried to stop taking the medication.  I have heard from friends that Oxycodone will cause back pain; I am wondering if I have been taking this drug for pain, when the pain was actually created by my medication.

I haven't taken Oxy in 6 years (the Rx was filled in 2010) but I have a terrible painful staph infection on my leg, nothing was helping and it was so painful I couldn't sleep. I broke down and took one 6 year old Oxy and it worked great taking away the leg pain, but after 3 or so hours I started getting bad lower back pain which was the original reason I got the Oxy prescription 6 years ago. Makes me wonder.  Makes me wonder.

I just recently got off morphine and it caused severe pain in my lower spine. I'm still on 2 norco a day and I wonder if its what is causing my neck pain. I was told four years ago that I had hyperalgia but then they moved me from norco to methadone. Go figure.

Your post is very interesting. I would ask that you please start a "brand new thread" (because you posted on an old, 2 year old thread and probably won't get many replies).

In the meantime, check out:

I have had severe/chronic back pain since January 2009, ever since I injured my sacroiliac area. I had a sacroiliac joint fusion (bilateral). I have had severe/chronic/acute pain before the surgery and after. The surgery failed and left me with the excruciating pain that I have had on a daily basis ever since. It is now January 2015 and I remain in pain. I have been given epidural injections they ALWAYS increase my pain. I have had cortisone injections. Same story. I have had Dilaudid injections at E.R.'s. The Dilaudid lasts for about 45 minutes but causes me to have the side effects of incredible shaking and a pounding headache. I have tried every OTC pain reliever and every opiate that is out there. Oddly, when I have tried these pain relievers I have greatly increased pain. The same thing occurs when I use muscle relaxers. No doctor has been able to explain to me why this happens. I just had another epidural injection. As a result my pain has tripled. Does anyone know why this happens? Am I, perhaps, very sensitive to medications? Oh, how I wish I knew the answer. I hope that what I have written helps any one who is having the same problem.

I have since drop dose in half to 45 a day and much less side effects and Easier to stop taking and withdrawls not as bad, but you should still gradually taper off and not just stop. It's to much of a shock stopping so please people taper properly!

Yes pain pills cause pain. It will NOT increase your pain but let's say you have migraine with aura "intractable" and all of a sudden now you have back pain, well it's from the Oxycodone and my doctor agrees. However the back pain is annoying and painful but its kitty snacks compared to the migraine pain that make you not want to live. I try to take monthly breaks, because I hate becoming dependent on anything and after just 1 week I notice addiction and dependence kicking in. If you really don't need them, don't take them. I am forced to take them because of the disabling pain from my 5+ migraines per day which I tried every medicine on the market to see if I could prevent, mri's,bloodwork with no luck. I am finally able to manage my pain thank f-ing god since most doctors don't want to treat your migraines and think the pain is not that bad. My migraine pain is so bad my hands will get clammy and heart beat will race and sometimes I faint from the pain. If I'm driving well I have to pull over and prepare for hell to kick in. At least the aura I get before the migraine let's me know I'm about to be screwed in 20 minutes so get home and get off the road and pop a pill. I was on 90mg a day of the 30mg Roxy's since over time percs will destroy your liver from the Tylenol, so better to get off the percs people. While on percs they also made my migraines worse because Tylenol does that to migraines same with advil"ibprofin".....My bloodwork showed my liver enzymes 3x the normal range and it was from percs. I started roxi and even a 15 and perc was just 10mg yet my liver enzymes are in the normal range and its because the tylenol in the percs.
After I stopped them for a month they did a number on my seratonin levels and natural dopamine and put me in a deep depression which was opiate induced. That's why so many heroin atticks for example give in to there craving's to feel happy, normal again not always to get high. Before you know it your taking your meds not for pain but to feel happy from there euphoric effects. However those effects will cause psychological issues down the road and that **** is no joke. I feel different this year more then any other year of living and that's from the depression caused by the opiates which even celexa did not help with so I gave in and started the opiates again and what do you know after a day I feel great and before I was having trouble going to get a gallon of milk from the store because the depression. My back is killing me as I type this and its from this stupid medicine. I'm only 30 and my plans of police work and military were cut short from these migraines. I'm only 30 and already had shingles from the stress. I now have nerve pain caused by the shingles which neurontin helps but not much.
Please people don't take unless its a must. My brain has been changed by this medicine and I feel strange and just wish I could go back to feeling how I did last year but it's to late. The medicine permanently causes irreversible mood changes. ***** balls

I am so interested in what  you had to say and desperate to find out more info.  I have been on "pain management" for more than 2 years and I feel like my quality of life has gone done since.  I went on them after being on Tramadol for years but could not take it due to side effects (heart rate issues) and it just was not enough.  I have been treated for Lyme and even when I am doing better with the bacterial fight (and other infections) my pain is worse.  I was suspicious in the beginning that I was in more pain after taking the oxycodone but my doctor lied to me and said that pain pills do not increase pain.  I just searched it and found it there are plenty of research articles written about this and they call it something like "hyperalgia".  What I have also wondered is what you touched on about my life choices.  I wonder just how much of my isolation, staying in bed, not going out (even when I am feeling better) is due to severe pain exacerbated by riding in car etc. or maybe it is as you suggest some side effects of the drug.  Maybe they are psychosocial side effects caused by the opiates and I don't know the answer.  I know that it is some of the answer as I suspected it before I read what you wrote.  I am in so much pain that I fear getting off as I know that none of the over the counter drugs work.  I take 30 mg x 6 per day.  Compared to what others take, this seems like a lot.  I was on more--other drugs combined with this and I was able to cut back by adding warm water with baking soda (8 glasses) per day that neutralizes the acids caused by the bacteria or something else in my body.  So if you feel like answering, I am curious as to the other side effects-what should I look out for--how does anyone come off the pain pills and deal with the intolerable pain.  I am doing better physically so I can now exercise (too ill before, too sick before--still ill but can move around now--due to staying on antibiotics and herbs etc.).  Thanks.

I have recently kicked my oxy after a 6 year usage .I never had pain any where other then in my back and legs but since stopping them back pain not to bad but still having some hip pains but its managable so far. Whatelse they don't tell you is weather u relize it ur not is the pain med put ur head in a fog bank a lack of caring ambition isolation there is a hole silent package that comes with taking pain meds over a long period of time and things happen so slowly u don't see it ur clouded but when you stop and ur head clears u see the damage . So any one taking pain meds really evaluate what's going on around u try an stop taling them and see if they are causing pain it worth it. Cuz they cause more problems then they solve if u take them for long periods ur life will start to revole around a bottle of pills. Thanks an sorry

ooops sorry  I accidentally hit post .  so here is the rest of it....

Anyway, they looked at arthritis and MS but I tested negative and they tried steroids, non steroids etc etc but the pain got worse.
Now I found this site I'm hopping mad with docs that is. How dare they give out these drugs that have such awful side effects.

After being encouraged by the posts above I have cut down my oxycodone to every other day and then less and less. Golly you guys are on such high doses, I can hardly believe that.  So even 10mg a day can snare you.
The thing I want to know is how long does it take for the other pain to go. My back has been better and the painlkillers have helped me to excercise and get stronger. I think I can go without  it if I can get rid of the other pain.
The phantom pain is worse than the origin accident.

Also, if I take other painkillers like panadene forte, will this still cause the phantom pain to continue or worsen. I have had to go for something else to get through.

I see one of you has gone 22 days, well done. Its really hard.  I have been 8 days and I had so much pain I had to take relief. Then I went another 6 days but bombed out.  How long will it take. Help !!

So glad to find I'm not going nuts and its the drugs and not MS or worse.

I'd be so gal of any comments.

Thanks, Linda

Hi People,

I'm so glad I found this forum.  I Googled "does oxycodone cause pain" and found you.
Now my fears have been confirmed. Seems it does. One year ago almost to the day I woke up on excruciating pain in my feet and hands, wrists.
I have been on oxycodone for about 3 years, after an accident left me with 6 broken vertebrae and 9 broken ribs. Surgery didnt help either did pain clinics and thats how I got on the Oxy.  But, wait for it, I'm only 10mg a day. The pack says to take 2 but I was a bit sceptical about that and can manage on one. Even so I finished up with this pain in my feet hands and wrists... so odd.  I lived with it for a while then went to the doc as I could hardly walk. Living in an area that has a high rate of Ross River Virus, this was the first place my doctor headed... Nope, tested negative

Hello Waldo, Welcome to the Pain Management Forum of MedHelp. You pose a very good question, one that many do not want to hear. The word Mollyrae is looking for is Rebound pain. This is a discussions among many physicians and Medical Professionals. How much of this exists, how does this vary from patient to patient and yes is it a fact for everyone or just a few?

In some cases there is also the phenomenon of rebound pain, whereby the wearing off of the drug brings on an exaggerated level of pain which calls for more drug and a negative vicious circle of narcotic use. And some medical professional believe weaning off can simple mean between doses for some ppl.

As is the case with all, meds different medications have different effects on different ppl. Where some will experience rebound pain, others won't or will have varying degrees of this phenomenon.

I am very glad that you discovered that you pain medication was effecting you in this manner. It is important for others to understand that this is not a factor for everyone. Thank you for sharing.  I am pleased to hear that your pain is gone.

Take care and best of luck to you. Tuck

Hi Waldo and yes, Opiates can cause added pain to your already pain issue. I can't remember the term the Doctors use but in the last couple of years or so, it has been proven that opiates can be the source of pain. My Doctor told me that some of my added pain that I have experienced lately could in part be due to my pain meds...Go figure. I think if you pose this question to your Doctor, he/she will tell you the same thing.
Take care, Mollyrae
