Hi butterflyLies,

I want to join Tuck in Welcoming you to the PM (Pain Management) Forum.  :)

I'm very sorry to hear that you received 2nd degree sunburns on your back!!  It's been a long time since I've received a really bad sunburn like that but I can still remember how much it hurt and the length of time it took to go through the "peeling" process.  Ugh!!  I do know that getting too much sun can certainly cause other problems with your body.

It frightens me to think that you were out in the sun with your 100 mcg Fentanyl Patch on. That's an extremely dangerous thing to do with Fentanyl.  I live in Arizona, in the Phoenix area, and our temperatures reach 115 to 120 degrees in the summertime and I make it a point to stay inside out of the sun because of what it can do to my Fentanyl Patches.  I'm on 87 mcg's every 48 hours.  I was on our covered Patio watching my Granddaughter in her little swimming pool for only 15 minutes when the temperatures were around 105 degrees and I became nauseous and  went inside and laid down.  My patch had become too warm and was letting more than the normal dose of Fentanyl into my body.  I was alright after a few minutes but it really frightened me.  I told you this story because I can't stop thinking what could have happened to you since you were wearing your patch at the time you were receiving your sunburn.  I'd say you were extremely fortunate that nothing more happened to you.

I don't have any idea whether or not the patch has affected your Urinary problems, but I do know that Opiates can cause some problems with it.  For instance, when I have an anesthetic in the hospital for surgery, I always have to be catherized after the procedure because my bladder will not function until all of the anesthetic is out of my system.  I know that it's more difficult for me to urinate now that I'm on the patch than it was before I started to use it. The patch inhibits anything to do with your parasympathetic nervous system. Everything form digestion, defecation, urination, salivation and lacrimation. In other words anything that is moist is going to become dried. I'm used to it and i just cope with it.  Whether or not it would cause you to "not be able to stop" urinating since the sunburn I have no idea.  It seems that it would have done the opposite.  Which explains why it's usually difficult for you to urinate as it is for a lot of us that use the Patches.

With everything that you have going on, I think you really need to make an appointment with your Doctor and tell him/her what happened and see what he/she says about it, as Tuck recommended that you do. After all, you have had a very bad sunburn and some after-effects from it that need to be checked out by a Professional.

Please keep us updated on how you are doing and what the Doctor tells you.  I'd really be interested in knowing what he/she tells you about the effects that the patch may or may not have had in any of this.

I'll be watching for you updates and wish you the very best of luck.........Sherry  :)

Hello and Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. Sunburns are so painful. Sorry to hear that yours is 2nd degree. When did this burn occur?

I doubt the urinary symptoms or the select areas that you were burned have anything to do with the patch. I hope you have consulted your PCP and keep him/her apprised of your symptoms as they change or become apparent.

Am I understanding your post correctly, you wore the patch while you were in the sun for an extended period of time? This is very dangerous from the aspect that the Fentanyl Patch delivers more medication the warmer it becomes. Heat and the patch do not mix and it can become a life threatening situation.

Hope this helps... and again please contact your PCP.

Take Care,
~Tuck
