Best Articles on Methadone?

Does anyone know where I can find articles that are concrete in using methadone for chronic pain? I'm on 110mg's of liquid methadone and have to go to the clinic twice a week because I have 5 take home days. But I don't want to have to go there anymore to get the medicine. - At first,I went there because I was taking percocet for my FM pain and kept having to take more and more to get the relief I needed. I became pregnant and doc told me to go to methadone clinic in order to withdraw from the perks for if I didn't the stress and withdrawl symtoms would be too much on the baby. So I did and was monitored by the nurse who headed up the M.O.M. program at the clinic. (mothers on methadone). I delivered a healthy 7lb baby girl on November 6,2007! - I'm still taking the methadone for it works on my chronic pain, yet my doc and also the new doc at the clinic I go to (different from the clinic I went to at first) doesn't seem to think it does work. Although I'd like to detox down to about 90-85mg's first b4 being prescribed the pills. So what I need are some really good articles to print out and bring them with me to my primary doc so he might have a change of heart in prescribing it to me. To go back on percocets I'd have to detox all the way and that would take 4eva plus to go back on them,I'd have to take alot of them again. Where methadone lasts a full 24hrs.
I hope I can get some replies!
Thanx for reading!

Hugz,

Characteristics of Methadone Maintenance Patients with Chronic Pain
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Volume 19, Issue 1, January 2000, Pages 53-62
Robert N. Jamison PhD, Janice Kauffman RN, and Nathaniel P. Katz MD.

Abstract: Chronic pain patients who have limited access to opioids may be redirected to methadone maintenance centers for management of their pain. Unfortunately, little information exists on the incidence and characteristics of methadone maintenance patients with chronic pain. The aim of this study was to survey individuals at methadone maintenance centers in order to determine the prevalence of chronic pain and to explore differences between patients with and without pain in this treatment setting. Of 248 participants interviewed at three centers, 152 (61.3%) reported chronic pain. Compared with patients without pain, those with pain reported significantly more health problems (P < 0.001), more psychiatric disturbance (P < 0.05), more prescription and nonprescription medication use (P < 0.001), and greater belief that they were undertreated (P < 0.001); 44% of those with pain believed that opioids prescribed for their pain had led to an addiction problem. Most of the methadone maintenance patients stated that they had always required some substance (alcohol or opioids) to feel normal. These results raise many questions about chronic-pain treatment policies and resources for persons with a history of substance abuse. Further investigations are needed to define the needs of this population and to improve their access to effective pain management.

Hi beatlette,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I have searched for the excellent articles that was written by a physician on the positives of methadone treatment for Chronic Pain (CP) sufferers. I cannot find it.This physician felt that methadone was the best opiate for chronic pain with the least side effects.

I will keep looking but it has not come up on my goggle search. I assume because I can't remember the name of the physician. It should be in MH archives as there was a discussion on this articles some time ago. I will try to find the article when I have more time and get back to you.

Take Care,
Tuck
