My dear Susie,

We have MUCH more in common than you would EVER believe. I have an artificial hip also. In fact it is the 2nd time that this hip has been replaced!! The first hip lasted for 26 years and was PERFECT.

After that long the cup wore out in the hip and the adhesive sore away. I had it replaced again in 2006 and they BOTCHED the job. The pain I had was exactly what you are describing. How have they decided that nothing is wrong with the hip? If all they did was take an X-ray that ISN'T good enough. It will not tell the entire story. My PM (Pain Management) Doctor had an MRI done on mine as I've known (since day 1 of the surgery) that something was wrong but of course my surgeon said that ABSOLUTELY nothing was wrong. It was all my imagination OR it was my DDD in my back!! I knew better.

The MRI discovered that the pins that they put in MISSED the bone and went into the muscle and up against my colon AND against some blood vessels. Tere is also a pseudoaneurysm caused by the screws. The cup is in at a verify sharp angle and my hip actually pops out and I have to lay down to get it into a position that I can get around without my walker. It usually takes about 10 minutes for that to happen.

I'm NOT saying that this has happened to you, BUT I am saying that you NEED to check it out further and DON'T take your Surgeon's word for it as he has everything to lose if he messed it up. You might need to tell them that you need something stronger for your pain as this isn't doing the trick.

I hope that you will keep challenging them and insist on more tests. YOU know when something isn't right and ONLY you!!!

Please let me know what you find out and I hope and Pray that yours is ONLY Bursitis as that is much better than haveing to under go the surgery again as I will.

My husband had Diabetes and lost his battle with it. I'm so VERY glad that you are controlling it. I think that women have a MUCH better chance of controlling it as most men don't want to have to mess with it and if their wives don't  plan everything for them then they don't ever eat right.  :)

I look forward to your updates. If you want more info PLEASE feel free to PM (Private Message) me.......Sherry

Hi Sherry,
Thank you for the information. It has not exactly been diagnosed as bursitis, I am guessing. I have had both hips replaced, left on in Feb of 2008 and right in June 2008. Both were doing great and I was getting ready to go back to work in December of 2008. Unfortunately we had a snow storm when I went to see my doctor and I lightly stamped my foot to remove snow from my pant leg, pain shot straight up my right leg and has been painful ever since. I have had cortisone shots in my lower back (2), that did nothing to relieve the pain and 3 directly into the hip, which worked approx 2 weeks each. I have seen 4 different surgeons and while none of them can figure out why it hurts, they all agree exploratory surgery is not an option at this time. I take tramicet for pain relief, but standing after 10 minutes or so is excruciating and walking more than 100 feet and there better be a comfy chair waiting for me and I'm not going to make it back. I have put so much weight on in the last 2 years because of lack of exercise, I now have been diagnosed with diabetes, but it is in the beginning stages and being treated with diet, exercise and medication. Within 6 months of being diagnosed, I had it under control, and the surgeons think that may have something to do with it. So, I have been told to try and deal with it for the time being and hope it eventually heals. There is no infection, no problem with the ceramic lining ( a problem some have I guess), I have great movement now, just pain that goes into the groin area, and down the outside of my leg to me ankle and lately have notice the pain in my inner thigh. By that I mean it hurts to touch it. It had started off by touching one spot in the middle of the surgical incision. Tylenol does nothing, haven't tried Motrin, but will try it.
Thanks

Hi Susie,

I want to welcome you to the Pain Management Forum.I'm glad taht you have found this Forum. Please understand that we are NOT Doctors. We are CP (Chronic Pain) Patients that help each other based upon our own experiences.

As Crochetya has said, Bursitis is inflammation of the Bursa. The Bursa is fluid filled sacs that separate certain muscles; muscles and tendons; tendons and bones etc. Particularly around shoulders, hips, etc. It is very painful and is treated with anti-inflammatory meds such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Celebrex, etc. You can also apply Ice to the painful area and it also helps to strengthen the muscles around the affected area.

What has your Dr. recommended to you to do for  your Bursitis? Where is yours located?
Be sure that you get a pamphlet from your Dr. They usually will have some sort of literature for you to have that will explain everything to you.

If you continue to have trouble you might want to consult a Rheumatologist as they specialize in inflammatory diseases.

I hope that we have been able to help you and that you are able to get some relief.

Please keep us informed as to how you are doing....Sherry

This is the inflammation of the Bursa  located near the ligaments of your joint.
It is very painful. Once diagnosed, your Dr. will give you anti-inflammatory drugs and a pain reliever. Make sure your Dr. has the correct diagnoses.
