Butt (Tail Bone) Pain

I went ice skating with my boyfriend and I fell straight on my butt. At first it hurt a little but the next day was when I really felt the pain. Its been now three days and it still hurts alot. I can't sit all the way back, after a while of sitting I have trouble getting up, it hurts when I sit, lay on my back, even sneeze. Every little move I make I feel the pain. Does these mean I fracture my tail bone? What do I do?

Hi Alana,

Welcome  to our Pain Management Community. I am so sorry to hear about your pain from falling during ice skating - most of us can relate.

It's difficult to determine at this point if you have an injury to your coccyx (tailbone) or you have bruised the area. Bruises can be very painful and that pain can last for days - maybe even a week or more.

Do you have pain directly over - or on your coccyx? Is it discolored (Ecchymotic) or swollen? Does the pain radiate or is it localized over the gluteus?

The gluteus is the three muscles that form the buttocks: the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus. The gluteus maximus is a large muscle' - and it offers protection for falls, among other functions. If you are very thin it's not as protective - but normally it does a good job of protecting our coccyx from serious injury.

So I suggest that you rest - try not to sit anymore than you must - avoid doing things that increase your discomfort. There is a  foam cushion called a "donut" that is shaped as you might think - like a doughnut. That cushion takes the pressure off the coccyx area, reducing the discomfort and promotes healing as the circulation is enhanced to some degree. If you can fashion something similar to sit on - it may help. .

Ice the area a few times a day can also reduce inflammation and pain. Ask your parents about an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) or just Acetaminophen to help reduce the discomfort if you're too young to take an NSAID.

Keep your parents informed of your discomfort. If you are not feeling better or the pain increases you should consult your family health care provider.

I hope you'll soon be feeling better. Please let us know how you are doing.

Best of Luck,
~Tuck

The exact same thing happened to me. I fell down the stairs, landing on my butt.
I went to physical therapy for a year for muscle tension, which I'd apparently had all along, and when my symptoms still didn't subside, the therapist concluded it wasn't a bruise or fracture or anything, but muscle trauma. I asked my primary care doctor about muscle trauma, but she said it's really tricky to treat, and after spending all that money on physical therapy, I'm not about to spend more.

What helps me with my symptoms is a coccyx cushion. You can buy them online. They have a hole cut out for your tailbone, and although it isn't my tailbone that hurts, I carry this cushion everywhere with me and it makes the pain much easier to tolerate.
Good luck, and may we both find permanent solutions!

I went ice skating yesterday for mothers day and I fell straight on my bum, I didn't even put my hands down so my coccyx (tail bone) took all of the weight and I couldn't get back up of the ice, as soon as I hit the ice it instantly winded me, I coulddnt get back up or even walk, I find it hard to do anythink because every little movement hurts so much, what can I do or take to repair it??

Girl I recently fell in front of my gym. I go there with my 12 mo. Old baby on a daily basis. I feel your pain. I was carrying my baby and slipped on some ice in front of gym windows. I could not control my breathing nor move. People came out to help and paramedics came and I was taken to hospital. I could not bare the pain so cried ALOT.  I did break my tailbone and on lortabs and muscle pain pills. My husband immediately helped out as much as he could. We have 3 children and doctor said up to 3 weeks it should feel slight better. I'm very active with my kids and very upset this happend. I went to chiropractor and it did help. I believe u should look into that too or have someone massage you muscles to spread them out. I hope you get better and no one really knows the pain till its happens to them. Besides having an epideral for my 3 kids then this has been the most painful thing in my 26 yrs. Also we are definitely looking into a lawyer for this as well.

I am going on holiday in 2 weeks and it is really uncomfortable to sit down and when i have been in the sitting position,I cant get up.
I have to sit on my side so I am not in pain but it really hurts.
Also, when I go away,,my family have payed for us to go to a massive water park, I am wondering if it would still hurt me if I sit inside the rubber rings?
The doctor have given me Ibuprofen and to take two, three times a day until I go but I am worried that I will not be able to sit on the plane, and will not be able to have a good time because it will constanly be on my mind.
I sleep with an ice cold flannel on the bottom of my back, but I am just wondering if you have anything I could do just to sooth the pain before I go away,I would be so so so greatful!! :/

I did exactly the same as yourself but i did it to my left side. I have been experiencing the same problems with the numbness in the thigh etc. after going to a and e they told me to do the same as you but the pain is unbareable at work, the crap chairs, and moving around alot also.
They had given me codiene phosphate which makes me drowsie and want to sleep, i guess this makes me forget about the pain but i also dare not to drive with it.
The doctor also told me that they dont prescribe the rubber rings anymore, which i think should still be avaliable.
He also told me if the pain is still very sore and the numbness keeps continuing to contact my local GP.
He said that if you have broken the coccyx bone and the reason why it could be affecting one side of your body is if it has realigned itself to left or the righ hense the reason why its painful on one side,. He said the only real concern to them is if the tail bone pushes forward towards your womb etc.,In men it doesnt bother them as much. But for women its an issue with wanting children later on in life.

hope this helps

i have exactly the same problem but in my left side. Did exactly the same as you but on icey steps, went the a and e and they said i had broken mine after he felt the area. I have trouble releasing gases and also going to the toliet.

They gave me phosphate codeine which just simply makes me drowsy and very tired. I was advised if the pain still continues to go see my gp. But however they didnt explain why i was experiencing pins and needles and very soreness in the left side of my hip.

I would go and see your gp as i am going to do the same

Hi, I had a fall last saturday night on some slippy wet steps. Due to it happening very quickly I did not have time to put my hands out to protect myself, so landed straight on my coccyx with a great force. I went to my local hospital yesterday as I was still in a lot of pain and was also experiencing a numbing pins and needles feeling in my right hip and top of right thigh! The Doctor was not very helpful and did not give me an x-ray, he just felt about the area, did a few reflex tests, then told me my coccyx was badly damaged (duh! I told him that before he did any tests!!) They told me to take strong painkillers which gave me very bad stomach pains so havn't took any today! Reading through your comments I am guessing this will be a long painful ride so will just need to move on with my life, work etc... and deal with the pain. I am feeling the pain the most when stepping out of the car (I have to walk with a limp for couple of mins until the pain eases), sitting down or any sudden movements, such as sneezing are also very painful. I am stil going to work but have found certains ways to be a little more comfortable, such as, if I sit down I sit on the edge of my chair with a straight back or i sit on my knees(or knee, swapping over) as this seems to be the only comfortable way for me to sit without jumping around in pain. I have also been placing a hot water bottle on my lower back at home(this seems to ease the pain quite a bit for a short period of time). My doctor never told me what the numbing pins and needles were....has anyone had this?could it maybe be due to the inflammation?

Hi  I know you are not going to like what I have to say but back in the 80s I fell down the apt steps I lived at at the time and hit my tail bone.. I went to doctors because it hurt really bad.. but he just gave me meds for a few days. I can honestly say my tailbone hurt when I went from standing to sitting position for almost a year and half.   I hope yours doesnt last that long. but its a really horrible place to injure.. best of luck.

Angie, I'd get it checked out.  I did something similiar years ago but never got it checked out.  I have severe tailbone pain.  It's officially called coccyxdynia(sp?), but all that really means is pain in the tailbone.  My pain meds hardly touch the pain in my tailbone, but my rheumy gave me a compounded pain creme that works well.  I hope you did nothing too serious.

Hi Angie...Ouch! I did that when I was younger and it hurt for weeks. I ended up bruising my tail bone but you certainly could have fractured it. It could even be as small as a hairline fracture which is really small but still hurts terribly.
If you cant stand the pain you can go to the ER, they will do x-rays and wil tell you if it's fractured. Of not you probably bruised it very badly.
If you dont want to go to the ER you can always make an app with your regular DR in the morning(or now depending on the time where you live) and they can send you for x-rays.

I hope you get it looked at. Even though they cant do much if you fractured it they might give you something to make you more comfotable.
Feel better
