Chronic toe pain

A couple years ago during the sports lesson a big box thing fell on my toe (1st cuneiform), I was in a lot of pain, I was in a pain for the next couple weeks and I couldn't walk. I didn't know whether to go to the doctors or not. I decided not to go to avoid the medical costs in case they wouldn't be able to help me anyway. A couple years later and I still have chronic pains in my toe (mostly light pain but at times more pain), it also pops everytime I move my toe up and down.
I would like to know how I could cope with the pain when it gets bad and I'm curious to know what the injury might have been.
P.S. I don't think it was bruised but I think it was a bit swollen.

Gout is a good thought. Thanks for suggesting it.

Gout, usually called Gouty Arthritis is a nasty painful and usually localized arthritis. When effecting the big toe there is redness, swelling and it's hot to touch. Gout is caused when you have too much uric acid in the blood - and than those uric acid crystals deposit in your joints. It's more prevalent in males than it is in females.

It doesn't usually occur after an injury - but it may and certainly other forms of arthritis certainly can. All possibilities should be considered - and hopefully they will be when Sofia consults her physician.

Tuck is right, our big toe is very important. It helps us walk. Without it we would be in big trouble as far as balance and walking. I think you should go to a foot doctor. They have X-ray machines and could help better than a GP. I'm sorry for your pain. I hope you can get some help

Hello Sofia,

Welcome. I'm sorry to hear about the pain you are experiencing in your great toe.

Given a heavy box fell on your toe I'm guessing you may have had a crush injury including damaging the joint(s), tendons and possibly the ligaments. It's also possible your FX (fracture(ed)) the bone and it has healed improperly.

Our toes have a complex structure - though we don't often think of them in that manner. Our great toe is responsible in part for our balance and takes a great deal of pressure/weight of our body.

NSAIDs may help the discomfort and the internal inflammation but it's time to consult your PCP (Primary Care Physician). I wish I had a better answer for you.

Good luck my dear - and please let us know how you are doing.

Take Care,
~Tuck
