Could be anything but....

For the last day or so I've had this really odd pain that covers my upper right side back and chest and into my shoulder. The pain is just above noticeable and isn't causing me any real trouble but the reason I think its strange is that it comes and goes. At first I thought it might just be some gas but I took some Rolands and it dosen't seem to help.

Could this be muscle tension from copious amounts of computer work, did I sleep on my side wrong? Or could it be something more serious.

I ask only because it deals with my chest and I'm always afraid of heart disease because it does have a history in my family. Any help would be great thanks.

No, that means your gallbladder isn't working properly.  LOL!  :-)

Your liver produces about a quart of bile daily to help digest your food when it empties into your small intestine.  A few tablespoons is held back in the gallbladder for use when you eat a very fatty meal.  The gallbladder gives a little contraction and squirts some more bile into the small intestine to help break down the extra fats.  If it's full of stones, or just infected and not contracting properly, that can cause the symptoms you have.  By the way, gas is also a fairly common symptom along with the pain.

Some people get gallbladder attacks when a stone lodges in the duct and blocks the flow of bile.  If the stone moves, there are no more problems.  If not, the gallbladder needs to come out.  Your doctor can send you for an ultrasound to see if you have gallstones.  A nuclear medicine test called a HIDA scan can measure the thickness of your gallbladder (thickened walls indicate infection) and also measure how much bile is ejected upon contraction.  Anything below about 30% indicates something isn't right.  Bottom line, you need to see your doctor.

I wouldn't worry too much about heart disease, but your pain symptoms are in a classic area for gallbladder problems.  Yes, it really does make your right side hurt, goes through to the back and right shoulder area when your gallbladder is having a problem.  If you've recently eaten a fatty meal, that's likely the problem.  If it doesn't ease up soon, run it by your doctor.
