Excrutiating pain from temple to collar bone!!

by xillaira, Jul 29, 2009 06:43PM
I am a five foot 98 pound woman of 26. I have had two healthy pregnancies both delivered by cesearean. I began to experiance severe back pain after a fall down a flight of stairs when I was 14 years old. Though initial x-rays showed nothing wrong 3 months later I had developed 36 degrees of c-spine scoliosis with 17 degrees of torque. In 2006 I found a wonderful doctor who fused my spine from t2 to l2. That same year I began losing weight and in the midst of trying to riddle that out found out I have several large nodules on my thyroid. While ddealing with that I began to experiance seizures, I moved back in with my mother as I could no longer watch my son alone only to find out that my pain specialist I'd seen since I was 16 had given me medications that cause seizures when combined. Once off the meds I never seized again but shortly thereafter we recieved the results from the MRI I had had done before we knew the cause and was at that point diagnosed with Chiari 1. Now 2 and a half months ago I had a tooth pulled and the next week my 5 month old daughter died from SIDS and a week later I began to have excruciating pain in my face and neck on the left side. Can anyone shed any light on this? Can it be the chiari 1? Or can Soma or MS Contin cause Jaw type pain? I just don't even know what type of doc to call. The pain is keeping me from eating or sleeping and my dentist wants 1100 bucks up front to check for TMJ. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to our Community. I am so sorry to hear of all the medical issues you are experiencing and of the lose of your daughter. My heart goes out to you.

I don't know a lot about Chiari malformation type I. According to what I have read it is not unusual to have neck pain that radiates into the shoulder. Headaches are also common.
Neurologists or Neurosurgery are the specialists that best treat this condition. It is not a common condition so be sure that the physician you select has experience in treating others with this diagnosis.

Before I would up front the $1,100 to the dentist I would make sure your symptoms are not a result of Chiari 1 unless he is willing to give you a written money back guarantee that his treatment will relieve your pain. I doubt he will do that. But this is just my personal opinion I am not an expert.

Please let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your updates with interest. We are her to support you and I hope you will join us whenever you can. I wish you the very best.

Take Care,
Tuck
