I had a Coloanoscopy sp? Anyway, a camera in the large intestents and one in the stomach. The doctor gave me a mussel relaxer before the procedure. I informed him I built up a tolarence to (benzosBenzo-o-stetic) KlonopinKlonopin Klonopin wafer as I have been taking it for many years for seixures. When he started the IV of FENTANYLFentanyl Fentanyl citrate nothing happened. He gave me as much as he could and still feel safeSafe driving for teens Safe sex . Still nothing. The col. was VERY painfull. I told him I would rather die from cancer than go through that again. I passed out two times on the table from pain. He decided to investigate the FENTANYLFentanyl Fentanyl citrate to see why it didn't work.
Two months ago a nurse was fired for being caught taking the FENTANYLFentanyl Fentanyl citrate out of the viles and replacing it with a Saline solution. The hospital is very hush hush about it. First, I thought you had to break the top off to get the FENTANYL out of the vile? Second, Do you think my tolarence to (benzos) Klonopin made the FENTANYL not work? Anyone heared of Klonopin blocking FENTANYL from working? During the IV I heard the nurse tell the doctor uneasly we are already up to either 100mcg or 1000mcg (if I heard it right). Any thoughts?

Im SO SORRY you suffered this way! That is terrible =( and btw, no your tolerance to a benzo would not effect opiates at all. Is the hospital doing further investigating, and are they keeping you informed? I would be livid that I suffered such horrible pain that way. Please keep us posted how this turns out
Troubleinohio is correct. You should have felt the effects of the fentanyl regardless of your Klonopin tolerance. I am so sorry that this happened to you.
I would be sure that to report this to the hospital and demand an investigation and answers. It shouldn't have happened to you and hopefully demanding and investigation will see that it doesn't happen to someone else. I am not suggesting that he won't but don't depend on the physician to follow through on this. Make lots of noise. Too bad you didn't immediately have a drug level done to determine just what was in your system.
I've had three colonoscopies and was out with all of them. I take narcotics for chronic pain and even that did not have an impact on the effectiveness of the IV fentanyl that I was given.
No one should ever have to go through this procedure without adequate sedation. Again I am sorry that this happened to you. Please let us know the conclusion of the investigation.
There was a pharmacy tech here who got caught taking the opiates out of capsules and replacing it with other medications. People were at risk of adverse drug reactions with no one having any idea what they were taking. Please take Tuckamores advice and follow up on this.
The question to ask is why did the doctor proceed with a colonoscopy when you were apparently completely unsedated? That alone never should have happened.
No one would proceed until the patient has shown that he/she is at an adequate level of conscious sedation.
That's the question I'd be asking. If the Fentanyl was stolen (yes, most Fentanyl is in a glass ampule so it cannot be tampered with unnonticed), that's one thing. But to proceed with a patient who is obviously unsedated is quite another. Your doctor would take the blame for that.
I agree with Peekawho! THat thought didnt even cross my mind at the time, but now that it has been brought up...WHY did that doctor proceed when you were in such agony?? You definitely need to get some sort of legal advice here. I mean, I dont like when so many people sue unneccesarily, our country is SUe-Happy, but this definitely falls into a category of having a good case. You certainly would be justified in filing a suit
Back in 2006 I had gallbladder surgery. I was given 2 shots of morphine through my IV and I was still in very severe pain. The nurse was about to give me another shot of morphine and decided not to at the last minute saying I don't need it and put the syringe back into her pocket. I was charged for all three shots of morphine. I also recieve horrible care after that surgery, the nurses were rude and told me to go home even though I had extreme pain. I was so angry. I never did complain, although I should of.
I found out that criminal charges are being brought to the nurse. I talked to another doctor that does thst dose the same king of procedure. He said the doctor I had does the procedure old school. This younger doctor is more up on the newer methods. The younger doctor said the doctor I had is getting out of the business and a replacement is already in the works. He can't believe my doctor didn't stop knowing something wasn't going right. I can't believe the younger doctor told me all of this!
Anyway, I'm going get the hostpital records and the doctor records and see if I have a civil case.

Sorry for the last post (miss spelling and wrong words. It's 3:30am and I'm not at my best. let me try again.

BBq- glad to hear you are pursuing this...also see if you can get the name of the nurse who was present during the procedure and talk to her (assuming she isnt the guilty party who stole the drug??!! ) She would be a good witness for you if she is innocent. Were there other people in there too? Im assuming there's usually several staff members present for such a procedure? Get everyone's names who were there that day and get their statements (ask a lawyer if you should record this or what, too)!
There was one nurse that I taught in school. I know her and she can help me. Too bad I didn't immediately have a drug level done to determine just what was in my system which was Tuckamore's idea. I was not in any condition to think about that though. There was another nurse there too. I don't know her name but I can find out. I'm sure she is not the guilty nurse because the guilty one was fired. That's not to say other people ate stealing drugs though. I'm going to get to the bottom of this, you can be sure!
Thanks for the update. The younger physician is correct. These procedure use to be done without any sedation. However I am very sorry that this happened to you.
My mother and step-father each had the older form of this procedure done some 25 years ago by an elderly surgeon in a very small rural setting. The each received a tablet of Diazapam. My step-dad went first and mother thought that as a man he was over reacting to pain. Mother (now 77) had it done the next day. She soon found out that her husband had not over reacted. They had seen this surgeon as their PCP for years and trusted him. This was not all that abnormal in the "sticks" of an isolated community. Back in the day one physician would often meet the entire needs of his community. Needless to say they refused the usual colon cancer screening after the initial one. He quit practicing shortly after at the age of 78.
Today even in our small rural community this would never occur. I absolutely agree that your physician should have not continued with the procedure.
Unfortunately diversion happens every where, even in our community. About 12 years ago the RN that took care of my grandmother in her final days was fired several weeks after grandma's death for stealing morphine. My grandmother was pain ridden in the final days of her life and the morphine did not appear to help her in the evenings when this RN was on duty. The words anger and irate can not begin to express my feelings towards this RN when this was made public. The RN had her liscense suspended for only a year and is once again practicing but not in our community.
The majority of our RNs and Physicians are good honest and trustworthy ppl. We need to get these impaired medical providers out of the profession. I am happy to hear that you are a pursuing a remedy to this horrid incident.
It sounds like you will not require the drug screening though the more evidence the better. I'll watch for your updates. Best of luck.
Sorry to hear about your colonoscopy BUT I had this same thing happen to me a few years ago. They used fentanyl and some other stuff and I was still very wide awake and screaming in pain during the whole thing and of course the doctor didnt stop. But I always thought it had to due with my tolerence to pain meds at the time. So it had nothing to do with anyone stealing it if that person was already fired. Also I remember the pain being so bad from it that it took me several months to recover. I'll never forget that pain, being able to feel every twist and turn in your insides. And they kept injecting and injecting me with stuff but with no effect. It was a scary situation and I've now decided that I will enver get another colonscopy as long as I live and I was only 24 when this happened, so if I ever get to the point where I need it for life or death reasons, they're gonna have to put me out completly or else they're not getting anywhere close to me.
So I really feel bad you had to go thru that pain, whatever they did to us was not fair, we shouldnt of had to indure that kind of pain in these times where medical technology is so advanced. Also I've refused to go back to this doctor, he was very rude to begin with and he should of stopped and figured out why I was screaming my head off and begging him to stop. And the sad thing was that my aunt was my driver (this was done at a hospital that was a 3 hour drive from me) and she wanted to stay with me the whole time cause she said she felt that something wasnt right, but they said absoutly no family members allowed, which made no sense cause she said she got to stay with her husband when he had his done a few years back. I just know that if my aunt was with me she would of been arrested after she was done with that doctor (shes the sorta woman that you wouldnt want to mess with). It just makes me feel more hopeless with doctors, I already have anxiety from them from when I was molested by a sleeping doctor 5 years ago, and now this.....
Some people think doctors sit on a high pedistal but they are only people just like us. Some are bad and some are good. You can bet I'm going shopping around (like in a Wal-mart) to find the right doctor for the next step in this process. I know how you feel and some doctors just are bad people.
I'll keep you all posted

This is true. Doctors are no different than you or I. My new doctor is very humble as he told me that my job as a Mom outweighed his greatly and even the man who cleans the floors are important. Every job has a place and without these jobs the doctors could not do theirs.
So their are those doctors out there who know they are only human and wish to be treated as such. Of course there are those doctors who think they are gods and they are so wrong.
While I have a huge respect for what they do and all they have done to learn the medical field I still think they are human just as we are.
Don't give up hope there are great doctors out there:)
I'm just curious here, I've had about 3 colonoscopies to date and don't remember receiving IV Fentanyl?
I do recall receiving IV Propofal the med which apparantly killed Michael Jackson.
Perhaps I'm wrong here, but they give you this med as a sedative but it also acts to take away any memory or recollection you may have had about a given procedure. Am I making sense here or does this ring a bell with anyone else?
Also my 19 year old son just had an endoscopy and a colonscopy while I was in the room with him and you are definately NOT out as we may think we are, he thrashed around the table which was very difficult for me to stand there and watch, they had two big gunthers holding him down. The Drs and nurses assured me though that he is not in any pain or suffering and that it's normal to move around during these procedures????
If it takes your memory away it's not like you'd remember it being painful anyway would you?????
My first colonoscopy about 12 years ago I remember being given versed sp??? I remember going in and thinking I so totally 'with it' here and them inserting the scope to my 'wailing' OUCH!!!!!! The next I remember was waking up in the recovery room. I know, men really are wimps huh!!
