Help these headaches are driving NUTS

I have been taking Amitriptyline for about 13 days (25mg) and for a few days the pain seemed
like it was getting better and these past 2 days they have been awful sharp stabing pain on the left side
of my head and my left ear also hurts. I keep hoping that this new med will kick in. one thing i was wondering
was Chocolate would that make my headaches worse, because i ate 3 chocolate chip cookies the day before
my headaches started hurting really bad again. so if anyone can help.

I take tylenol. It does not cause me to have rebound headaches but keep in mind that everyone is different.

In fact I do not take tylenol for a headache because I find that it doesn't touch it. I am an Ibuprofen person. It works wonders for me.

Have you had any releif with your headaches of late?
Peace, Tuck

OTC is over the counter. How much of the Tylenol are you taking? Tylenol is tricky... because it can cause rebound headaches (headaches that are actually caused by the tylenol) If you are currently taking more than 2 adults doses a week, the tylenol could be causing your headaches or making them worse.

My neuro had me stop taking all OTC painkillers (like tylenol) and I never took them again because I didn't want to cause the rebound headaches.

If you are taking a lot of tylenol (I was taking around 8 tylenols a day) you need to either slowly reduce the amount you are taking or go back to your doctor, tell them you are worried about rebound headaches and want to stop the tylenol you can also ask them to prescribe a small burst of predisone (this will help with the headaches when you stop taking the tylenol... especially if you are having rebound headaches).

Also once you are clear of the tylenol you might want to try ibproufin (advil) it's an NSAID and they typicall work better than tylenol for headaches, but again be careful because ibproufin can cause rebound headaches as well.

Do you always 24/7 have some sort of headache?

Chocolate can trigger headaches in some people. One thing you should be doing is keeping track of your headaches (write down when you have them, how long they last, what you think could have triggered them, and what you tried to help the pain and if it worked or not). Keeping track of this is very helpful in finding and patterns or triggers that may be causing your headaches.

Basically just about anything can trigger headaches... and they only way to pinpoint it is to keep track and try eliminating that from your diet some food products that commonly cause headaches are: caffeine, MSG, red wine, chocolate. Other things that can cause headaches are: allergies (indoor or outdoor), menstruation, exercise.

Are you taking any OTC pain relievers for your headache? If yes, what, how many and how often? OTC pain releivers can cause rebound headaches if taken more than 2 times a week.

Good luck! Try keeping track of your headaches and look for patterns/triggers.

Hello Justme,

I am not sure if chocolate can make headaches worse. I have heard that but I am not sure if it is a fact. I'm sorry for all your pain. Your are welcome here. I do want you to know that we have a Headache/Migraine Forum also. You may also want to post this question on that forum. Just click on forums at the top of this page and they are listed alphabetically.

I do know that Amitriptyline can take 4 to 6 weeks to be effective. Are you taking anything else?

Others will post that have more experience than I in this area. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing. Take Care, Tuck
