I have never had constipation problems and I have been taking  opioids for twenty years.
I always make sure I eat plenty fiber and I eat applesauce daily and this works fine.
I also drink plenty of orange juice too.
It sounds as if you will need to do this after you have a good bowel movement though as it will not help at this point since your already so backed up. Please go to the ER and have something done now as this can be very serious if you let it persist. You may have to have a disimpaction. It is a little uncomfortable but it works w/o all the medications.
Please let us know how your doing:)

If your impacted and it sound as you may be you might have to go to er, It happened to me following a hemmoroidectomy, I had to get a enema, with tons of internal stitches not fun, I am suprised no one mentioned colace, It works pretty good and is gentle for most, of corse take it with a big glass of water preferably two, Pain meds are binding so if your on them consider changing what you can like your diet, try to avoid binding food like red meat, cheese , etc.. Ask your dr about colace and see how many you can take per day, i took one or two tablets with every pain pill after my impactation experience.Do not let this continue too much longer, I have heard of people having as much as 8 lbs of impacted bowel movement removed, if you have a rupture, you could be in serious trouble, You sound to me like your gonna need some professional help for this one then with all the advice given you, you can learn to adjust yourslef to avoid this from happening again. feel better!

I also can relate to your problem, I suffer with chronic constipation for as long as I can remember. I would definitely see your doc, but in the meantime , what I drink over the counter is a natural tea, called Organic Smooth Move.  It's a very gentle effective temporary remedy, comes in chocolate and herbal , tastes good. You can purchase in Whole Foods or if youshop at Shop Rite. I also get it there.   You dont have to worry that you will have to run to the bathroom quickly, doesnt work that way, you will feel the urge to go probably anywhere from 8 to 24 hours and it just comes out very smooth. You really sound a bit blocked up but sitting on the bowl and waiting and pushing does not work, you have to go only when you feel the urge and sit and relax, it will come. Good luck. Let me know. Also drink lots of water which I need to learn myself.

Are magnesium citrate and magnesium hydrocloride the same??
My pain specialist assured me this was safe to use on a daily basis when on oxy...it does NOT cause me to go more than once a day..a normal formed BM.

TJ,

I also replied to your other post. It is difficult to beleive that a medical practitioner would not offer more suggestions than to just push. See another physician.

I think you have gone beyond what you are able to do at home, I would suggest you see  your own doctor a.s.a.p....or the ER, you may have become impacted and need medical attention!!
this can be a serious issue.
good luck

Hi TJ,

I am sorry to hear about your constipation issue. An enema, if not contraindicated, may get you going but after that you should consider taking measures to avoid this happening in the future.

As NurseAudrea said do not use Magnesium Citrate!!! It has extremely potent laxative properties and you may be in the loo for a long time!! Once you have a bowel movement that you may want to consider brain flakes, bran muffins or prune juice daily. An OTC fiber drink or tablets can be helpful if the "natural" foods are not. Be sure to drink lots of water every day and be as active as you can be.

I hope you will soon be feeling better. Best of luck and take are.

I also wanted to mention that if you take pain meds every day, I take Kadian- a long acting Morphine, you don't want to use something like I did. I took Magnesium Citrate about two months ago. I had surgery and was put on more pain meds than I was used to. I did not go for a week and had to do something about it. I had gotten the Mag. Citrate and thought it would be okay. It wasn't. It worked like a charm, but it kept working too well. I went and went and went. My meds went through me so fast that it put me in WD's. It took about 5 - 7 days before it calmed down. Once I started going the meds went through too fast, so after the effects of the Mag. Citrate wore off I had the runs from the WD's. Not a pleasant experience. My PM doctor told me I should have used an enema. I will never do that again.

The easiest and fastest way to deal with this is with an enema. It gets it all out in minutes and then it's over. A laxative can cause major stomach spasms to last all day, but they usually work also, just takes longer. If you have problems with constipation it's a good idea to take a stool softener every day. Most people don't know this, if you don't have a bowel movement at least every two to three days you can get diverticulitis. And that can lead to more serious problems. It's always a good idea to make sure that you go every couple of days at the least.

I've had long term constipation problems even BEFORE being put on oxycontin, so I was really worried.
My pain doc told me to use 2tbsp MILK OF MAGNESIA morning and evening.
It has worked great, don't even need a stool softner with this stuff.

Agree, an enema seems to be the thing to try unless you have some kind of rectal problems that would prevent. THEN, take a stool softener OR a stool softener w/laxative. Trust me, as I am sure you have experienced this can be VERY painful. I have now started just last night taking 2 stool soft w/laxatives in morning and night. After a regular pattern develops I cut down to 1 tablet twice a day. Some are too embarrassed to talk about this problem. Thank you for bringing this up and opening for others to voice and view. When your problem occurs, you can feel as if you are dying, and I'm not joking. I am on pain meds for chronic and acute pain. Any more suggestions from others. Thanks.

Oh my, 4 days is a long time. You might want to consider an enema, this will get the hard fecal material out and then enable the rest to follow. They are not too difficult to give yourself, I do it myself many times as I have constipation problems. After you get things "moving" I would suggest taking a stool softner daily, this will help to prevent this from happening again.

Good luck
