MRI shows no problem yet still experiencing pain

Im on Atenelol and Lisinopril for 15 years for High BP . Im on Acto met Plus for Diabetes type 2 since Feb 20th 2009. My cardio Dr prescribed Pravastatin for minor high Cholesterol and I had a very bad reaction to the statin drug that I took for 5 days and stopped April 5th 2009. Bad pain all over in my joints and muscles. On April 13th the pain subsided in most of my body except in my Left kidney and left lower back region and traveling down thru my Hip, thigh, knee and ankle all on the left side only. Was sent to a Ruemetology Dr who thought I had a 4th lumbar problem and and had an MRI of my lower back which showed no problems. He refered me to a Nuerology Dr amd my appointment is May 6th. In the mean time having to take voicoden every 6 hours. Also experiencing some numbness on the inside left ankle and pressure sensitivity to pant leg on inside left thigh. Reum Dr thinks it might be a pinched nerve

I recently started PT again and got some good exercises to cope with my nerve pain. Tilting your head down and doing a very slight chin tuck helps wonders.

Hi Steven,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. Sandee offered some good suggestions. I am not her but if you don't mind I'll try to respond to your question.

If you goggle "Nerve Entrapment" you will be able to find some information. You can narrow the search by adding "treatments" to the end of the search words. I usually do both.

I agree that Nerve Conductivity tests and an EMG will offer your physicians a more clear picture to your pain. MRI's are wonderful tests but they do not reveal everything, every time. The neurologist may want a repeat MRI or another test that can also look at the structure of your spinal canal such as a myelogram. A myelogram uses a dye and  fluoroscopy to make look at the bones and the fluid-filled space (subarachnoid space) between the bones in your spinal canal. An MRI did not reveal the severe disc rupture my father experienced some 8 years ago, but a myelogram did.

Please do not give up until you receive a reason(s) that you are comfortable with for your pain. It can take time and several visits to several physicians but keep looking until you do obtain answers.

We are here to support you in anyway we can. If you have additional questions feel free to ask. Please let us know how you are doing and take care, Tuck

Just because the test does not show any problems does not mean there not there. My PM doc says just because the test results do not show you have a problem causing pain doesn't mean there's not one there.
You could have a pinched nerve or even some damaged nerves but the doctor will order test to see what's going on. He will probably order a nerve conduction study and that will tell him if you do in fact have some problems such as nerve damage or pinched nerves.
Do not give up though as I said the test do not always give us the answers we need. The fact is you are having pain and that needs to be addressed.
