Medication Question

Found out on Friday there is actually something wrong with my right knee that could be causing the back pain (the back pain was in my back and sending pain down my right leg). They are doing surgery on Wednesday because back in '09 I had a lateral release in my right leg and my band in my knee healed and grew back really thick, so he is going back in to thin the band up. He said he believe it is what is causing all my pain and etc. If it makes any sense.. I am excited because I have been in severe pain lately and to know on Wednesday that will be hopefully gone.. makes me happy! The exact term for the surgery I am having is called "Right knee scope with Debridement of Lateral Plica"

My main question I have for you all is I am currently on Tylox 5mgs 3x daily. Last month, when I went to my doctor we talked about how my resistment is starting to build up again it and the 5mg are no longer working. So, I know all medicine is different for everyone but when I got for my surgery on Wednesday, I have to see about him calling me in a different type of pain medicine for my surgery because 1) They will not let me get more tylox filled right now since i can only do so once a month and 2) my resistant to it now. I am HIGHLY allergic to hydrocodone so can any of you suggest some medicine that could be good so I can talk with my doctor about medicine. I have a lot of allergies to medicine. I can't take morphine or dilaudid. As i have to be careful with new pain medicine and because of my allergies to the current pain meds (hydrocodone, morphine, dilaudid) do you have any other suggestion that I could suggest? I know I can take Demerol pills because I had to take them 2 years ago for surgery. Would that be a good medicine to discuss with my doctor or is the Demerol a little too strong for a knew surgery? Thank you in advance for your help. Hope everyone has a blessed Sunday!

Thank you, Nikki. I hate I am in this situation. like I said in the post above yours, I usually bring this up with the doctor but with me going in about my knew hurting.. I didn't expect to be leaving with a surgery date. I will just have to request to talk to him Wednesday morning and also express my issue with my nurse as well. I hate having so many allergies but that is part of it. Thank you all again for the response! I will check back in after surgery on Wednesday. Everyone have a wonderful week!

I am opiate intolerant. Morphine I am allergic to. Vicodin does not work. I understand where you have a problem. They had to put me on the Fentanyl patch after my surgery. Dilaudid works for me but I see that you are allergic. Demerol If It works and You don't have another option is what they will have to give you. Also ask about Ultram.

Roll Tide bamabred! that made me smile. I usually ALWAYS discuss this with my doctors but I went in on Friday with this problem to be seen and they scheduled surgery for Wednesday so it all happened really fast and I forgot to speak with him about it. I will talk to the nurse on Wednesday morning and also request to speak to my doctor before surgery! :) thank you guys!!

This is something you really need to talk to your doctor about well before your surgery.  It's likely you will initially need something stronger for that acute post-op pain, probably for the first few days and then they can decrease the dose.  Make sure you have a contact number in case you have any problems.

I have had 9 surgeries on my hand over 4 years.  After one of them, they decided to switch to a different med.  I think it was dilaudid (I've been on so many I can't remember.)  But it didn't work for me at all.  I had my pain management doctor's direct number.  She told me to double the dose and that did nothing.  She then changed it to a different med and I was fine.

My daughter is allergic to a lot of medications and I always worry that she'll have a really bad reaction.  She's away at college and I know she doesn't keep a list of what she's allergic to on her.  Hopefully she'll get smarter as she gets older and realizes it's something that's really important to keep on her.

Good luck with your surgery.  Have a talk with your doctor and see what he thinks.  I'm sure they'll figure out the right med for you.
