Ultram is a lightweight when it comes to being able to control pain, but if your pain is not severe you might do OK with them. The problem with Ultram is that it attaches itself to the MU receptor in the brain, just like narcotics do, so even though Ultram is billed as "non-narcotic" it is still addictive. So if you take it and it doesn't work well for your pain, tell your doctor immediately and have him prescribe something stronger because you will end up becoming dependent on the Ultram and still not have adequate pain control. And, as someone has already stated, Ultram is very difficult to get away from. Much moreso than vicodin or percocet.
Well I have a different take on Ultram (23 yr old male), I have been dealing with chronic pain for a thoracotomy done to remove a staph infection a couple years back and have been on percocet(3 months), oxy-codone(2 months), morphine(1 month), lyrica (1.5 years), and ultram ER(.5 years) and ultracet(.5 years) ...my experience is that first off for MY type of chronic pain ultram is far more effective than lyrica and while not as effective as morphine, oxy, percocet, or valium it is far far less addictive and does not have the severe side effects, I have changed meds and ultram yes you have to ween off of it but it was not that hard at all to get off of compared to the percocet or oxy.... There is a reason it is not a Scheduled drug or classified as a narcotic....and for me it is not addictive and is all I need to get my pain levels tolerable (300 mg daily) but you should speak to your doctors about your concerns as they would be able to provide REAL insight and alot more valuable info than I or anyone else can.
Okay, this poster was not concerned about the medication helping the pain, they wanted to know how the medication would 'feel'.
Perhaos because there was no little orange lable saying it was a controlled substance.
These are the types of posts we may want to think twice about answering with information instead of support by saying, maybe-try seeing how it world for your pain-
All of us in true pain need to be aware that there are people who come onto this site trying to use us for imformation to manipulate DR's or finding out which drugs are "good" and which arent worth trying to feel good from.
This poster did not return probabky because it wasnt as strong as they hoped for.
I suspect this is not an honest post.
I urge anyone else to put a stop to these types of things if a poster asks:
How a pill feels, what do I say ti my DR to get narcotics, will I get in troubkle for this?, how often can I take these? and other things that center around only getting and taking pills.
Of course not everyone is a fraud, but its becoming more and more prevelant on this site and I think alot of us would like it to be stopped.
Y'know, I'm glad you posted what you did, because I never even thought of the possibility of that. Terribly naive of me, I know, but it never even crossed my mind. It makes a lot of sense, though. I kind of feel like a dummy now, realizing that I've been taking everyone who has come in to ask a question as being sincere, when that might not be the case at all. You're right, though, there is an awful lot to be said for the way a post is worded, and the information that is asked for. Thanks for opening my eyes. :)
Dont feel like a dummy, I';ve done it too. We really feel for people in pain. They know it and use it to get information. Its hard to tell who is being honest and who isnt and I know we never want to leave someone without support.
Hopefully we can all recognize a little more who is just pumping us for info to get high or get meds from there Docs.
But we've all been fooled, probably more than we think...So dont feel like dummy, we ALL have been giving info we probably shouldnt be.
But I think we can all help make this forum a little better when it comes to that!
I go to the health dept. b/c I do not have insurance and cannot afford to have the cysts on my ovaries removed. The health dept. hands out Ultram like they are candy. I am scared to take mine b/c I read they are more addicting than Lortabs, Percocets, or Oxycontins. Mine are labeled Tramadol. Have u heard about them being much more addicting than other narcotics?
Tramadol isn’t more addictive than other narcotics. The stories you've heard reflect it being prescribed ‘like they are candy’ for moderate pain with doctors not telling patients about the dependence that follows from taking it on a regular basis. When people take it regularly without the risk of dependence being explained and then discover they suffer withdrawal on stopping taking it they angrily post on forums saying what a terrible drug it is.
If it is taken intermittently you shouldn't develop dependence and even if you do withdrawal lasts about 3 days and while not pleasant is bearable. Withdrawal from stronger narcotics would be worse but people who are prescribed stronger narcotics would tend to have severe pain and conditions that require taking the stronger narcotics on a long term basis often for the rest of their lives. Such people would have the dependence issue explained to them and they would regard it as relatively unimportant compared to the relief from pain they receive so you are less likely to find them posting on forums damning the drugs they have been prescribed because they developed dependence.
The bad press Tramadol gets on forums reflects the far greater number of people it is prescribed to for a wider range of conditions without warning as to the risks of dependence rather than it being more addictive or harder to get off than stronger narcotics.

Thats my 2 cents on how ultram "feels"
