Norco vs. Percocte

by Soonerdean, Aug 08, 2007 05:24PM
In equal dosages...which is stronger....Norco's or Percocets.  Percocets constipate me terribly so the pain doc gave me Norco's which I have never taken before.

Thanks,

The government says percocet is stronger; hence the triplicate DEA form for the prescription.  In my personal experience, I've found Norco (hydrocodone) to be more effective.  All percocet did for me was give me constipation and make me parnoid.  LOL!

Percocet (oxycodone) is stronger than Vicodin (hydrocodone). Percocet is typical prescribed in 5mg doses. Hydrocodone is also typically prescribed in 5mg doses. At these levels percocet is definitly the stronger drug. Norco a brand of hydrocodone that comes in 10mg pills, and is there for equivalent to 2 normal hydro pills. People get confused and think it is stronger because they are taking two pills in one.

percocet (best is generic oxycodone by watson, NOT teva), is for outbreak pain, which is to say it goes to work faster.  Norco(?) which I assume, from above, like Vicodin or Lorcet, is Brand for generic Hydrocodone, works on a time-release basis.  Both contain the same synthetic codeine by dose; it is the other ingredients that make the meds different. I have been on (Percocet) Oxycodone for some 3 yrs. now for outbreak pain from fibromyalgia. (The "main med" is Fentanyl patch)  My doctor simply encourages a stool softener.

Right now, there are no long-acting, time-released preparations of hydrocodone.  Norco, lorcet, vicoprofen and vicodin are instant release, short-acting hydrocodone pills - like percocet.  Oxycontin is the slow-release version of perocet.

I was on norco 10/325 for a year and a half for chronic leg pain in my left leg mainly  knee and ankle I was taking eight of them a day which is a lot and barely getting relief so I had my doctor switch me to percocet 10/325 and I was able to take 4 a day and get three and a half times more relief but I was still having problems getting to sleep because of pain so I have been switched to the fentanyl patch 25mcg an hr and I get twice the relief of the percocet and my pain level while sitting or lying  down is down to a 1 and a 5 - 6 while standing or rideing bike but different  meds work better for different people

I was wondering if anyone can help me.  I have chronic and severe nerve pain from as the result of repeated angiograms performed through the groin.  I have tried neurontin as well as other nerve meds which weren't at all helpful.  I've had every block and injection imaginable.  Right now I take percocet 4 x day.  My dr. refuses to let me take a higher dose or allow me to take norco at the same time. Sadly, this is the combination that works beautifully for me but she says she doesn't allow her patients to take 2 short acting pain killers. Has anyone else run into this problem?  She said if I want to do that I will have to take a long acting one such as oxicontin which left me with horrible side affects and really spacey. (which incidently the two work wonderfully together for me). Anyone opinions on this would be so appreciated. Should I be seeing a different dr that is more flexible or try a different long acting med? Thanks for listening.

I found Norco works better for me than percocett.  My Norco is 10/352 which is 10mg hydrocodone and 325 of acetemetephin.  I have had cervical fusion and plating on C5/6 and then several levels above and several levels below are bulging or blown but I'm not ready for more surgery as I am too active.  I have tried Avinza and Duragesic patch which both made me itch terrible and make me so nauseated along with a wide variety of other pain killers but Norco and Zanaflex (muscle relaxer) are what I'm sticking to.  Also, for cronic pain down left arm I had a spinal cord stimulator implanted, it's like an internal tens unit and it was the best thing I ever did for that pain (I used Norco for breakthrough pain).  I'm hyper so sitting on my fanny isn't an option and I found that I can function now quite well with my stim + meds.  I had arm and wrist surgery and that doctor refused to give me the meds I now take, he says they are too strong.  I took the percocett as he prescribed but the acute pain from surgery didn't go away till I took my Norco.  Find a good pain management doctor and keep trying new ones till you find one that clicks for you.  JMHO

re: the constipation from pain meds.  I had suffered from the same thing but found a product that works for me and also relieved the bloated, stuffed feelings.  I take 2 fiber pills in the am and 2 in the pm and 2 around noon if I'm really needing more meds.  Don't know if I can name a brand but Citrucel works and has added befefits like my clothes fit better etc.  I don't get enough fiber in my diet anyway so taking these is a great way to help the process.  I refuse to drink any of those fiber additives, ick!  I can take the pills.  I take them as a routine and I don't have the nasty side effects from the pain meds.  Can't hurt to try them.

Thanks for your posting.  I am glad you have found a pain med regimen that works for you.  It's highly frustrating to deal with someone that undermedicates.  I know the problems with pain med addicts but I wish there was someone to complain to so that dr's aren't allowed to undermedicate. It's not fair to those of us that are really in serious pain.  I'm going to see a new dr. in a few weeks-I hope he is more understanding.  When I see my current one I feel like I'm going to a parole board rather than a visit to someone that's supposed to be helping me. I hope you keep feeling better. Thanks for the advice!
