Oxymorphone Vs. Oxycodone?

Does anyone have an idea,as to how strong any strength Opana(brand name)
is to Oxycodone? My new PM Dr. wants me to get down from 40mg of
Methadone to about 20mg,in only one weeks time, before he starts precribing
me Opana. I've already had been taking huge amounts of 15mg Oxycodone a
day,for 5 years also, along with the Methadone. I tried to explain to him, just how
tolerant,I had become to the Oxy,but I think it fell on def ears. Just wondering if
this new plan will be any different, than the plan that has failed in giving me any
pain releif at all,for the past 5 years. This is only the second PM Dr. I've seen
since my first started prescribing me huge doses of Methadoe and Oxy,so I'm
just alittle curious,as to how this new program will work,or if it's basically the
same med as Oxy. Any help distringuishing between the two forms of Oxy,
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks All.

You need to post this question in the pain management forum. Most people in here do not want to discuss pain pills!!! Just a heads up. You can answer most of your questions if you google oxymorphone!! They are both pretty potent opiates.

If you will look at the prescribing notes on the manufacturer's website you will find a table that recommends dosages for when you change meds. Your doctor should have used that chart

On the contrary, I have seen tons of threads here where people pose the same type of question!!  As a matter of fact, someone was asking about switching from methadone to subutex!  Dave W. Is trying to wean to a different med, as many people on here do, just as there are many people on here that take suboxone, subutex, methadone, as a way to work towards getting clean.  Just as there are many people on here who are still on pain meds and trying to figure out ways to get off; and yes, sometimes a persons way of getting of a med is to switch to a med that is less potent.  So most people on here seem to WANT to discuss pain pills, addiction, and offer their advice and support.  You dont need to make the guy feel like he cant come here

Thanks all. I really didn't even consider the thread needing to be somewhere else, since
I always saw people asking about different drugs they were taking, switching to,or getting off of.
No big deal. I'm not upset,so long as noone else is.

I am in a world of ****. I have a failed 3 level fusion.  My pain level can stay around 4 if I do next to nothing.  If I do much of anything, it can get to 8 or 9.  I have been on pain meds for about 8 years. I am trying to NOT take too much pain medicine, but not be in pain, and the meds I've been prescribed are for severe pain.  They are correctly prescribed-my back kills me, but the pain meds are killing me too!  I don't know what to do.

I have tried both the oxycontin many strenghts the 80 mg are not very strong the bes ones are the oxycontin 60 mg
but the problem is every 3 months like clockwork i would get very sixk vomiting and shaking very bad shivering in bed for at least 3 to 4 days every time i would get to my las few tablets like 8 hrs after my last dose this would happen it was crazy the pain mgt pac switched me to opana ER  40 mg twice a day v/s the 4 a day of oxycontin this is along with norco 10/325 10 a day 3 zanax 0.5 mg and soma 350 mg 4 a day but i would sisc every 3 mos like clockwork so the opana 40 mg 2 a day then up to 3 a day then finially i got the 4 a day which is the max most ins will pay it is $1596.00 for 120 tabs no generic available i think the oxy works a lot better but the side effects i dont get sick on the opana i have been on them for almost 6 months now i would love to take the oxy again but i know what will happen they say opana is stronger but i dont think so but i could be wrong maybe it is all in my mind

I am a person wit bad lower back pain as well as multiple year heroin addiction.  I went to clinics and moved states and there is only ONE clinic in the city and its downtown (hour away) plus I HATE THE WAY CLINICS TREAT YOU.

when i found my doc in the last who precribed me methadone i though the trouble was over.  ......but now i moved and have weeks left.   saw a doc here, he will precribe methadone but wants scipt opana.......(doesnt know about past heroin useage, and i dont want him to know.....im sick of second rate treatment, i want to be treated as a normy not an addict in a docters office...and i wont change so dont bother commenting on it)

But methadone is cheap, so if i was too poor for long acting opoids that be my only chioce.

im just a guy looking to get his methadone from a normal doctor, its so freeing

i travel alot and .....the list goes on and on its great to be free

Opana comes in 5 or 10 mg ir, the larger doses are all er. My dr took me off 30mg oxycodone ir and replaced it with 10mg opana ir, because my tolerance to oxycodone was too high. I have been on opana a few days now, and I am doinh pretty well (none of these meds completely relieve my back pain even after several surgeries) but I would say trust in your dr, and if what he is doing doesnt help, let him know as soon as you can.

Please excuse my stupidity But could someone please tell me if their's a difference between the way that the oxycodone 30 ir and the oxymorphone 10 ir work in your system and help a person that's in server pain And if they both show up in your system as the same drug Because I've been told that perkacets and oxycodone both show up as the same drug in your system And that the oxymorphone does not So if it's not to much to ask And without getting blasted out to badly LOL Could someone that's knows about these facts and the truth of the matter Please let me know Because from what I've been told and what ive been reading and finding about these drugs That's not true at all Thanks for reading God bless N good luck to all :-)

Oxycodone is the same opiate that is in percocets but without the tylonel. I have been on it for a long time for chronic pain, I also have a tolerance and am going to ask my Dr. if there is anything we can change to... everyone seems to agree oxymorphone is an option. But yes, to answer your question the reason it shows up the same is because oxyxodone is the medicine that is in percocet just without the tylonel. I swtiched off percs to oxycodone because I was taking so many that all that tylonel is NOT good for your body

My story is exactly the same as yours. 3 level.... meds...except I've been fighting it for 18 years. Have tried every pain med made I think. I didn't see where you said how long ago the surgery was done. My first was Aug 2007 then hardware removal in March 2009. SO here it is 4 years later and even though I haven't cut back on the amazingly huge amounts of opiates, I am finally starting to feel better. I guess what I'm trying to say is the spine heals very slowly. And if you smoke or drink a lot the process takes much longer. But after 4 years I do feel better. Not good. Not able to do any of the physical activities I used to enjoy so much. I have had to change the way I do everything. Give it some more time. I was going crazy thinking it would never get better but it has. The thing with the meds is to figure out what you need to take to take the edge off and still be able to function. After all these years I have finally conceded to the pain. It will be with me the rest of my life. Every minute of every hour of every day. Good luck to you.... It doesn't help the pain any to know that you are not alone with your struggles but, you are not alone...

I dont feel people should be condemed, feel unwanted or whatever for being on pain meds. I have multiple life threating illness's and actually almost died this last July  and it wont be my last close call I've been told. My doctors are trying to make me as comfortable and lower my pain level asmuch as they can for thats all they can do. Posting "help" questions here I'd think would be normal especially since so many of us use the site for health and medication research. Then we see "this page" and write what is on our minds, med related or not....

Opana is a very strong narcotic much stronger then oxy it really depend a lot on how much of it they prescribe if it will cover your habit methadone is also very strong and im a little confused are you staying on the methadone and the opana or just the opana ?/ anyway time will tell detoxing off of methadone is a miserable experience and I dont wish it on any body hang in there and Keep posting  ......Gnarly
