Pain from lower back to knees

I broke my back 2 years ago (L4) and since have had pain from my lower back to my knees.  I can pop my right hip very loud.  The pain feels like it's in my joints.  Like I have arthritis.  I can barely exercise because my back will go out completely.  I run on a trampoline.  I'm 29, not overweight (average) and the pain is unbearable at times.  I have done physical therapy and my neurologist basically told me there was nothing to do.  I take a lot of ibprofen morning and night..  I am very stiff in the mornings and at night time.  Should I seek pain management??  Thanks

It is not unusual for arthritis to set in after an injury. It's called traumatic arthritis. However it usually takes years before that occurs. It's not common at your age but that doesn't mean it isn't a possibility.

I am glad that you are exercising. That is good for most all conditions including arthritis. You said you were told there is nothing that can be done by your neurologist. Have you seen other specialists such as an orthopedic physician? I would suggest that you seek out another opinion before you turn to a PMP.

I do beleive that if there are no treatments for your condition and you have "unbearable pain" at times that you should be evaluated by a PMP. It certainly won't hurt and may do you some good. Yes there are other NSAID's, some even OTC, that may be more effective than the IB. This should be discussed with your PCP or a specialist if you chose to see one.

Please let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your updates.
Peace, Tuck

Hi there mate,

I'm sorry you are having bouts of severe pain.
Before you go to a pain mangement Doc or clinic I think there are other things you can do with minimal effort.
Whilst Ibuprofen is a great drug for many people, there are certainly stronger anti-inflammitories out there. A long acting one might be best to help you get up easier in the mornings.
I take a drug called Naproxen 1000mg, it lasts all day long and is very strong. There are also other strong NSAIDS that you could try like Diclofenac and Indocid etc.
You will need a Dr to write a script for those.
I'm not suggesting that you take these on my advice alone, but you might want to talk to your Dr about them.
There are also other types of drugs which may help you, such as anti-convulsants, which have pain killing properties as well.
And of course, keep up the gentle excercise.
Good luck,

Nick.
