Percocet, Alteril

I take percocet because I have sever arthritis and only at the most take 3 a day. I do wake up in the mornings sometimes around 2 or 3am to go to the bathroom and then I go back to sleep. I was just wondering if I could take Alteril to maybe help me sleep thru the night. I am hoping within 10 days after the Dr. does a procedure to my back I won't have to take the percocet anymore. I know one time I ran out before my appt and it really did not bother me that much. I just took some Excedrin Back and Body until I could get the percocet refilled. Anyones suggestions would be nice. Thank you.

Good Morning,

Thank you for your comments. I take the percocet for pain associated with my back and hip as I have some degenerative issues. Like you, I'm not a DR. and I really can't remember exactly what all they say is wrong with me. I guess I'm just falling apart at the good old age of 58.  The percocet does help with the pain. I can't take NSAID, I was on Celebrex for a little while and starting having problems breathing, so I got off of it. I will tell you that I took the Alteril and slept like a baby. I did not wake up during the night and felt wonderful the next day. It's contents are: tryptophan and a combination of herbs. I also take Osteo Bi-Flex Triple and I notice that my joints do work much better. They don't hurt as much and seem to be more flexible. I thought that was just in my head, so I did not take the Osteo for a few days and boy, I could tell that it really does help me. I take 2 in the morning and 2 about 6pm. I am serious, the Osteo does help me. Anyway, that's what works for me at the moment. I don't like taking pills, never have. This last week I got a cortisone shot in my knee. It is doing well for now. And next Wed. I am having a procedure done to my back where they are going to burn some of the nerve endings. If any of you have had that done, please let me know. I am a little scared about that, but the Dr. said I might help me for at least 2 years.

goodmorning.....percocet isn't an anti- inflamatory medication therefore I question why your doctor would prescribe that for arthritis pain relief???
I also have arthritis along with chronic pain from other conditions, the opiates are for my chronic pain however I don't feel they work on my arthritic pain at all, for this I use a  NSAID, I would question your doctor a little more on this before using a narcotic if it can be avoided.

well, that would definately be a question for your doctor.  But, if the excedrin back and body helped you than i would suggest using that instead of a narcotic pain reliever.  i wouldn't see why you could not take something to help you sleep but of course i am not a doctor and can't dish out medical advise like i am one but, once you see your doc that you should bring it up and see what he says.  i take "big dog" narcotics and when i am having a hard time sleeping i take a tylenol PM, i do not know what alteril is, so that would be a good idea to ask your doctor.

keep posting and checking back, i am sure others will be around shortly to give you a few more suggestions.
