Radiating Shoulder Pain

by knormal1, Apr 06, 2009 08:22PM
I am a smoker of 23 years, and I know I should quit but I can't and maybe I dont want to, I am not sure, but I have tried everything out there to quit.
A month ago I had to be taken to the er In an ambulance because I was having terrible chest pains that would come and go and an awful pain in my left shoulder that would come and go and radiate down my arm so bad that  It would just stop me in my tracks, as well as twitching In my left and right jaw. The er doctor said my ekg was fine and that maybe an MRI needed to be done by my primary care physician. I still have not been back to the doctor but I am still having terrible shoulder pain that comes and goes just like the chest pain. I am scared something Is going on.
I will get back to the doctor as soon as I have some sick time I can use. I was just there about 6 weeks ago.
What could be causing the shoulder pain? The pain Is so Intense.

Hi Knormal,

I am sorry to hear about your undiagnosed pain. We know how disruptive pain can be to our daily lives.

There are multiple reasons that you could be having shoulder pain. Some of those causes include bursitis, rotator cuff tendonitis or tears and more. Many shoulder discomforts which are only slightly debilitating and become chronic painful disorders as they are ignored and not treated properly.

Cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation), Gastrointestinal Disorders, Pleurisy (inflammation of the lining of the lung), costochondritis (inflammation of the junction of the ribs and sternum) are some of the conditions that may cause chest pain that can also refer to the shoulder to one degree or another. Conditions affecting the cervical spine may caused referred pain to the shoulders. In particular, disc bulging and disc degeneration are often associated with this kind of referred pain.

Of course the above conditions are just examples of the numerous conditions that may be the source of your pain. I encourage you not to wait until you have a paid day off. Your health is much more important than a few dollars.

Please let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your updates. Best of luck and take care, Tuck
