Sciatica Nerve please help?

I went to the dr other day about my low back and I explained that it is low low and when i sit down, there is a spot down the middle of butt just to the right a little close to rectum and it hurts, then of course from top of butt and about 4 fingers high its tender through there too. When I stand up or move up or back wow it just stops me. He said it was my sciatica nerve, which that's what a lot of people had said but I was just wondering if that could run along the outside of right hip and down. He gave me a shot of steroids and then gave me mathacarbomal ( spelled wrong ) he said was a muscle relaxer and I asked if this would cover it up or make it go away, he said it would go away but it still hurts really bad. could it

Hi Red,

Unfortunately your mother's physician is correct. There is no successful treatment for chronic long standing SIJ Dysfunction. My heart goes out to her.

I have been to every medical specialty that exist. I have tried a TENS Unit, Acupuncture, PT four times, SIJ steroidal injections, and every thing in between. Nothing has been successful. Surgery is only 15-20% effective and not recommended.

My only relief has come from my PCP. If you have read my posts you know that she is a Doctor of Osteopathy that specializes in Internal Medicine. She preforms bi-weekly osteopathic manipulation treatments (OMT) and muscle releases on my SIJ and supportive structures. A DO that practices OMT may provide your Mom with some pain releif. I could not function without them.

As far as medications I am sensitive and allergic to so many that my physician has not found one a long acting one that I can take without severe reactions. Of course that does not mean that your Mom would not benefit from one and I encourage you to continue to suggest that she at least tries one. I am forced to continue on a short acting one and it is difficult to handle the ups and downs.

Some SIJ Dysfunction patients even lose their ability to ambulate due to the severe pain that comes from placing any amount of weight on the joint. This is a seriously painful condition that has no "light at the end of the tunnel" regarding treatment or cure. In my opinion it takes strength, determination and a bit of stubborness to deal with the condition. Your Mom sounds like a wonderful person that has all of those qualities. I am not so sure about the other two but I am very stubborn! That's what has kept me going.

I admire your Mom's determination to remain active. It is challenging to say the least. If you want any specific information on SIJ Dysfunction feel free to send me a PM. Unfortunately I have a lot of information on the condition.

Tuck

Wow your Mom is awesome! I can't believe she has not retired or even thinking of it.
I am sorry about your Dad as well. It is tough dealing with a parents passing. I cry daily and do not see it easing up anytime soon. My Mom passed away in 1992 and I still miss her sooo much.
I am very glad you have taken precautions, I am sorry the surgery did not take. I am sure it is worrisome for you being what happened to your Dad.
Again, I am sorry for your loss.

No...She let's me know how much it hurts. LOL It has been getting progressively worse though and there have been days that she can't get out of bed. She is 70 years old and still works a full-time job and has no plans on retiring anytime soon. That does not help her situation.

My father died at the age of 40 in his sleep. He snored really bad and used to stop breathing while he was asleep but they didn't diagnose sleep apnea back then. I have it also, and sleep with a CPAP all the time. I even put the mask on while watching TV just in case I dose off. I had surgery to correct it but it didn't work so I guess it was hereditary.

I am sorry to hear about your mom.

I also forgot to add that Mom's will not let their children in on how much pain they are really in because they would not want to do anything to make them worry. This may the case with your Mom Red. She may not be telling you how much she is really hurting and may just take your advice and talk to her doctor about different medications.
Just a thought:)

Mom's , they do not think us children have anything to offer as we surely can not know more than Mom with all her years of wisdom:) My Mom would not listen to me either Red:)
I try and be different with my son who is 20. When he offers me advice I take it to heart because while I am older and maybe , hopefully wiser he does have something to offer.
Just my thought for the day.
Mom's are the greatest! I miss mine so very much!
She died from Parkinson's at age 42:(

Tuck will be on later. I know that she to have readjustments all the time and she does take medications but I do not think there is more than that that can be done.
She will post later though.

My mother has SIJ Tuck. Her doctor is telling her that there is really no treatment available other than light physical therapy and pain medication. Because my problem if related to bulging and herniated discs, I have not asked my doctors.

Is my mother's doctor correct? He has her on Vicoprofen, but it is not working very well anymore and she is starting to have to take more. I just told her last night when I was visiting that she needs to ask her doctor to change her over to something that will give her 24 hr. pain relief but she will not listen.

Did you mean the reasons that cause SIJ Dysfunction/pain or sciatica?  Sandee has provided you a good list of causes of sciatica but left out the SIJ. It's very normal. It is not included in most articles or lists.

Again it is often over looked and it is certainly under diagnosed. I went well over 10 long years without a diagnosis. Initially they looked for the usual and customary disorders and when they couldn't find one. No one even bothered to search again until I stumbled across an astute Doctor of Osteopathy.

But if your question is what causes SIJ pain one contributing factor is pregnancy as is osteoarthritis, abnormal walking pattern, misalignment of you pelvic girdle, uneven leg lengths and/or injury. Sometimes they cannot pinpoint what initially triggers it. It can come and go with minimal pain and never be a major problem. Other times it progresses undiagnosised and untreated and becomes a disabling condition. There are disorders that are thought to cause SI joint inflammation including gout, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

The sacroiliac joint lies next to the spine and connects the sacrum (the triangular bone at the bottom of the spine) with the pelvis (iliac crest). That's the reason one can usually "point" to the exact spot in their gluteal region where the pain seems to originate. Over the last several decades physicians tend to look for and focus on spinal structural issues for sciatica, buttock, hip and low back pain rather than SIJ issues.  Even to this day sacroiliac joint dysfunction remains difficult to diagnose as no non-invasive diagnostic test has been found to be able to isolate the sacroiliac joint (short of anesthetic injection blocks specifically applied to the joint).

Even though I had a DX from my PCP some specialist did not beleive it therefore I had to have the anesthetic injection to prove my condition. Caught early SIJ pain can be treated and may never return. Mine just went far too long and it is a permanent condition.  So please don't discount this possibility in your search.

Several different lumbar spine (low back) disorders can cause sciatica. Sciatica is often described as mild to intense pain in the left or right leg. Sciatica is caused by compression of one or more of the five sets of nerve roots in the lower back.
Here are the six leading causes...
a bulging or herniated disc
lumbar spinal stenosis
spondylolisthesis
trauma
piriformis syndrome
spinal tumors

Also here is the link that explains it...

Hello Bgb,

As you probably know, sciatica is not a disease or a condition. It is a symptom.

Sandee, Red and I all have sciatica. I would venture a guess that we all have different diagnosis that cause the sciatica. Your pain/symptoms sound similar to mine.

There is a spot in my buttocks that I can point to that is the source of my pain. It causes citation as well as pain down the outside side of me leg and hip. It's also sometimes painful in my very low back area and sometimes on the inside of my thigh. In approximately the area that you describe is your SIJ (sacroiliac joint). That little, often ignored joint is the cause of most of my pain. I can point to it. I have SIJ Dysfunction. It often hurts to sit on it. SIJ Dysfunction or injury is under diagnosed. Many physicians do not even consider it when their patients complain of sciatica or the symptoms that I described to you. Please don't think that I am saying that that is what you have. I just try to educate others to the possibility.

You should ask your physician why you are having sciatica. What is causing your pain? You may have a disc issue or nerve entrapment. There are several causes of sciatica. In my opinion you need to determine the source rather than just treat the symptoms.

I hope you will keep in touch with us. I will look forward to your updates with interest. We are here to support you.

Take Care,
Tuck

I also have this problem from herniations and a bulging disc at L4-L5, L5-S1. I used to just have the pain and numbness on the left side, but over the years the pain is now starting to progress down the right side also. The interesting thing is that the pain on the right side stops at the thigh and doen't go all the way down to my foot.

The shots you received were to reduce the inflamation in your lower back. You may get some relief from it as Sandee stated but for most of us that relief is short lived.

Hang in there as Sandee said and you may want to find a doctor that just deals with back injuries. They will usually take the best possible course of treatment with you. They will send you for an MRI to determine what is going on with your lower discs that is aggravating your sciatic nerve.

I have the same problem and mine does go down my hip into my right leg. Although mine has never gotten better the injections will help.
Hang in there and if the medication he gave you is not helping let him know so he can change it so that you can get some relief.
Let us know how your feeling:)
