I had a heck of a time with oxycontin when I first started it and each time they raise the dose. I get very sick to my stomach and it makes me very lightheaded and dizzy. Just hang in there, the effects will not last forever. Your body most likely needs to adjust to the new medication. It took me about 2 months to adjust to the medication when I first started it. It was not pleasent at all, but I got through it.
Hi Grampy,
I was told to take OxyContin or any narcotic with food. However as Jaybay said you should check with your pharmacist. He/she may also have additionally suggestions for you to help ease your stomach issues.
If you weren't told, the literature says you should avoid grapefruit and grapefruit products. That's a given with most all narcotics. If effects the action of the some medications and narcotics are generally one of them. But again check with your pharmacist.
In addition to discussing this with your pharmacist you should also contact your prescribing physician...I think that would be your PMP. He may have additional suggestions also.
It doesn't make me nauseated but on occadsion it does give me a headache. So I take Ibuprofen to ease the headache...and than the Ibuprofen causes nausea...so it can be a circle. In time your system may adjust. But don't suffer, consult your pharmacist.
Hope this helps and that you will soon be feeling better.
Take Care,
~Tuck
The nausea may also be something that might go away with time as your body gets used to the medication. In my experience, when I get narcotic-related nausea in spite of taking it with phenergan or food, it will go away in about 30 minutes if I lay down and don't move.
My sister is the same way. I'll never forget when I babysat her kids while she had an outpatient surgery done. Her husband brought her home and I stayed with her for the rest of the day while he went back to work. Sis took one of her vicodin tablets as she was hurting a lot from the car ride, and started buzzing around the kitchen doing various chores. I tried to get her to chill out, but she didn't listen. Next thing you know she was green and ready to vomit. Once I got her horizontal on the couch she was fine in about 10 minutes, but I wouldn't let her even go to the bathroom for a good hour.
After all these years with pain meds, I still occasionally react with nausea in spite of countermeasures. Getting horizontal always makes it better. Give it a try - it should help!
