Sorry it has taken me so long to post back to you.  I am a CL in the Dogs Community and we've been busy over there.  :)

The surgery I had was called an Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion, or an ACD & F.  The surgery itself worked wonderfully!  I stopped having migraines and I have a fantastic range of motion considering it's fused.  They did three levels, C4-5,  C5-6 and C6-7.

The reason I am a chronic pain patient now is because I developed Adhesive Arachnoiditis as a result of the myelogram they gave me before the surgery.  The doctor wanted the extra test performed to see exactly where the nerves were being impinged and felt a myelogram would be the most accurate way to tell, and I had a reaction to the dye they injected.  About 6 months after the surgery I started having horrible pains in my lower back and in my hips and that was the beginning of the arachnoiditis.

Tell your friend that I wholeheartedly recommend the surgery, although my surgeon told me from the start that he was extremely confident that the surgery would work.  There was never any talk of it maybe not being successful or possibly making things worse.  Of course, I wasn't told that Adhesive Arachnoiditis from the dye was a possibility, but I have since found out that they deliberately don't tell you about that since the percentage of people who have injections of ANYTHING into their spinal cords is about 75%.  Of course, not everyone develops it to the degree that I have, but ANY degree of this stuff is just NOT something I would wish on my worst enemy!  Tell him that if they suggest a myelogram, tell them to take a flying leap at a rolling donut and say NO!!!!!

Do you go to sleep laying on your right side?  Do you wake up with your arm underneath you?  T

he volleyball can really do a number on you, it is so hard.  I remember how much it hurt me when I was a high schooler.  Did you get an MRI of the shoulder after the injury?

Medical problems can turn up at any age, but I know it's not fun to have something wrong when you're young.  I hope you can go to a specialist(s) and get some diagnostic tests and ultimately, some help from your hand!

The volleyball is probably the cause. I played for many years...obviously serving, bumping, even spiking all puts direct contact on your wrist/hand and all the nerves, tendons, ligaments, etc.

I would certainly talk to your parents and get you in to see an Orthopedist...Hopefully the same one who helped you with your shoulder issues.

It's interesting that your parents took away your phone but let you keep the computer...LOL...

Just wondering how it turned out for you after having the discs removed?  I have a friend who has 3 herniated discs and it's causing him terrible pain and a huge loss of his range of motion.  He's reluctant to have surgery as they've told him it's very possible he won't get any better and is likely to get worse.  But to see him the way he is makes me concerned.  At some point he may be forced to have the surgery as one of the herniations is very large and also centrally located so it's causing problems beyond his neck as it's impinging on so many nerves.

I know that you have loads of questions posted to you by a couple of other posters, but I have one  more.  When you talk on the phone do you clamp the phone between your ear and your shoulder so that you can do other things while you talk?  The reason I ask this is because this is how all of my neck problems started many years ago.  I was a secretary and I would spend HOURS talking on the phone in my department due to what my job required but while I was on the phone I was also doing my typing.  This caused three discs in my neck to herniate and eventually totally rupture, requiring me to have them removed.  I started out with the same symptom as you, my hand(s) would fall asleep while I was sleeping.

Definitely have your parents call the doctor for you.  It's possible, though maybe unlikely, you could have carpal tunnel syndrome.  I know there is also something that can go on with the thumbs as far as all the texting and gaming kids do.  My pediatrician mentioned it a few years ago and I forget now what it is.

How long has this been going on?   Don't wait too long to get it checked as if there is something going on the sooner you get diagnosed and treated the better.

How much do you text per day? Talk on the phone? Type on the computer? And then spend time doing homework?

Do you play any sports or anything activity that uses that hand a lot as well?

All of this...along with as mentioned...sleeping on it the wrong way during the night can cause irritation or a pinched nerve.

Talk to your parents (as we are not Dr.s and no one can diagnose you on the internet)...and they can take you to the Dr. to get it checked out.

You are probably laying in such a way where a nerve is being impinged upon or where the circulation is getting cut off.  When you wake up, are you laying on the affected side?  If you have not been laying where that is a possibility, you might ask to get a referral to a specialist who can conduct testing for your circulation and nerve conduction if necessary.
