by jimbob2112, Nov 16, 2008 12:39PM
Would it be better to do oxy 40mg time release with Darvocet n-100? Or would tremedol I think its called? I also have Naproxen 500mg tabs......which one of these would be most effective together or to help me take LESS 40mg oxy's?

It might be a good question for a pharmacist or your dr.

Hi Jimbob,

Welcome to the Pain Management Community of MedHelp. I am glad you found us. You have asked a good question.

You have to be careful with mixing meds. I assume you are looking for something for break through pain and/or to reduce your Oxycodone use. I think the other medication you are talking about is Tramadol.

I would not want to venture a guess what drugs you should take together. Toolmaker had a great response. You can call a pharmacist or your physician. I know there is an "Ask your Pharmacist" that has been very beneficial to other members. I would be cautious about taking anything without discussing with the experts.

Naproxen is a NSAID that comes with multiple side effects and warnings. Tramadol is similar to Morphine in action though it is not classified as a narcotic. Darvocet provides little pain relief for most ppl. And to top this all of with what works well for one person does not necessarily work for another person. So your best bet is to ask an expert.

Good luck to you. I hope you are able to find a correct answer to your question and I am sure you will if you ask the appropriate professionals. Take Care, Tuck

Thanks guys I have my local pharmacy guy , he is really nice and seems very knowledgable...cant spell these days!

But ya tuck, trying anything to take less oxy (thanks for friendly welcome also). This is so weird for me, yesterday about every 4 to 6 hours I would be in agony, bad pain and need to take another 40mg oxy which always screws up my tab count.....and I think you know the rest...lol

I ran outta meds and had to go to ER to get like 7 tabs, it was just a awful week..

So today its been almost 12 hours now and I only have taken one 40mg (instead of needing 2 on most days, I would take the first one when I wake up then a second about a hour or 2 later)....Im not in really bad pain at all actually......and Im not craving oxy for some strange reason....i have about a hour to go as of this posting and it will have been 12 hours since last oxy 40mg dose....strange, what do you think I should guys? Ride it out until I start feeling WD's? Or should I take a dose at the 12 hour mark???...

Peace!

Jimbob,

If you are in a true pain flare you should report this to the physician that prescribes your pain medications. We all have them. If I understand your post correctly don't sell yourself short you may truly need the increased pain relief.

If you have been on this dose for sometime it may be time for an increase. Unfortunately our tolerance increases the longer we are on the opiates. But I am sure you know this already.

You ask a tough question. If you go to a PMP and are under contract the answer may be different as to when you take the next medication. If you are randomly drug screened than you have to have the amount of drug they think you should have in your system when they conduct the screen. I don't think you have a choice but to take the medication as ordered. And than report the flare to your physician. We risk so much when we don't take our meds as they are prescribed. I have heard of CP patients that were released by their physicians because they took too many or didn't take enough. I don't want to scare you but I certainly don't want you to lose the medication that you most certainly need to control your pain.

Others will post with additional suggestions. I wish you the best of luck . Let us know how you are doing again. Peace, Tuck

you say: "Or should I take a dose at the 12 hour mark???."
IMO, you could alternatively taken it with some msir 5 mg qid. it works -- all under the care of a physician. good luck.
