anyone know a good article on pain management?

Hi,
I won't go into a proper intro right now, but recently was passing out after my pm dr. changed my pain med. to oximorphone from ms.  I was admitted to hospital here at home.  My pm dr. is 5 hrs. away.  I live was in the boonies of the Ozark mtns.  I did have a kidney infection, but labs showed I had no potassium or sodium.  Nobody could really tell me why.  So anyway, my Daugher has always helped me when it came to medical problems, which was fine with my 3 (redneck) sons.  This time they were getting called, and immediately that asked the Dr. who had admitted me to the hospital meet with us all in my room.  To make a long story a little shorter, my youngest sons RN wive tells him I"m "Drugged". Actually it was that my Pc had changed my BP meds, and had me on a too high dose, so now I'm left with 3 boys who don't know sh-- from shinaola about anything medical, gives me an ultimatum to go to a rehab. place straight from the hospital.  I looked at the Dr. and said, " what the hell is this all about", he replies "hell if I know." My oldest son says, ""Well your blood test showed you had too much aspirin is your system", I just glanced at the Dr. then, and he was about to lose it, so all this to ask if anyone might know of a good article on pain treatment that isn't too complicated. I know it just scared them.  I have had many health problems over the years, but have always tried to shelter them, and my daughter can handle things if I need her to.
Thank you all for being patient with a long winded newbie.

Hi,
Believe it or not we all go thru similar situations with family or friends. They assume that were addicts or turning into one because we require treatment for chronic pain, a disease.
While the intentions were well meant they are ill informed about pain management.
I know of several articles and will send you a couple to give them.
All the diversion going on and the abuse that needs up in the media is a huge reason why this happens. Our families and friends think were addicts or on our way to becoming one because the media reports about the abuse that goes on and the deaths from these medications but they fail to report about the millions of people who have a better quality of life because they are able to take these medications. The media does not report how much these drugs has helped countless people who suffer from pain.
This is why we are left with our family and friends thinking we are in trouble with our medicines.
I have read where so many Pt's have this problem and it angers me and makes me sad that we have to justify our getting much needed medical treatment.
We have a disease just like some one who has diabetes and needs treatment. We need our medications and it is for medical purposes only and treament. if you were to ask 10 chronic pain Pt's if they like taking their prescribed medications all ten would say definalty not. We accept the medications and having to take them because it helps our pain and lets us live life to the best of our ability.
I am sorry you were put thru this as many are. We need to get the message out there that we are not drug seekers and we do not enjoy having to visit our doctor every month and we dont like taking narcotics. We do not like all the hoops we must jump thru to get treatment and then have to endure drug test and sign contracts.
No we do not like none of the things that come along with chronic pain but to live our lives as normal as possible we must if we want to spend quality time with our children and work and play. there's so many things we can't do we cherish the things we have left we are able to do.
Keep us updated on how your doing please.
I will send you those articles:)

Hi scarlettjoe:

The only information on pain management that I can think of would either be from a pain managements office or from the web. You might want to google "pain management" and see what you find.

Your Socs were just watching over you. They have been kept in the dark so to speak. You said that your Daughter has done most of the Doctoring with you so they really didn't know what to think.

With your Daughter-in Law being in the medical field, that really surprises me. She really needs to be educated on your condition and needs the facts before jumping to conclusions. I can see that Doctor laughing on the inside.

I hope that you find the information you're looking for. I know it's an important part in pain management. Stick around here for a while..you may learn a from the other members who have chronic pain. I know I have.

Please take care and good luck.
