8 yrs ago, my doctor told me i had sciatica and herniated disc. it started when i lost feeling around my left ankle like i had a sprain. the ct scan of my lumbar spine didnt show a slip disc.
this year i finally had a MRI showing that my lumbar spine is normal. but i have constant burning pain in my left buttocks and weakness in my left leg.i cant balance well because when i put weight on my left leg, my ankle and the back of the knee would hurt. when i also stretch my left leg in yoga (i practice yoga), my whole left leg would feel very sore the entire day, also the burning pain in my left buttock would come back. during my check-up with my neuorologist, she mentioned that my left leg is hyper-reflexive. i dont feel numbness, but every time my left leg is pricked, the sensation is twice clearer or something. im 29, female, and have been an athlete since childhood (swimmer and basketball player) im also a dancer. but now, i cant be active since pain has been unmanageable sometimes. i cant even wear shoes with heels. to relieve burning pain my left butt, i use a heat pad.
i need your help in terms of which doctor or specialist to go to, what tests should i take and so on.
i've been to a lot of doctors in my country and nobody knows what i have. thanks for the help.
Ask your doctor if they know the stretch for the piriformis muscle which is located right in the middle of your butt cheek. It mimics sciatica and bulging or ruptured disc hitting a nerve. You say that it started with a swolen ankle but that wouldn't be a problem coming from the spine because you should have symptoms from the problem (back) area to the foot or knee ect. Not the other way around like foot to the back. You may need a few visit with a good physical therepist or a sports injury doctor that works with muscles. This pirformis muscle syndrome does not show up in MRIs etc. Also if that doesn't work find a dr. that will give you a shot right into the middle of the muscle with corizone or steroid cocktail. You may need a few shots every 3 weeks to cure the problem. You can find stretches to do on your own that will mimic your pain but may help in the long run. Look up PIRIFORMIS MUSCLE SYNDROME STRETCHES on WEB MD. Good luck, I know your pain all to well.
I agree. I have pirfirmois syndrome for the last 3 years..and every so often, more lately, it flares up after a lenghty sit down event (movies, party) or even an attempt of walking uphill or a mile...I have found that physical therapy and certain stretches have helped immensely as well as icing during a flare up. I wouldnt mind trying the cortisone shot, but so far my therapists take the natural approach.
I've had burning pain, weak right leg, pain at back of right knee for the past ten years or more (plus incredibly flat feet). Doctors attributed it to muscle pain from scoliosis. However, I've just been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Hypermobility type. It's a genetic condition where the joints are extremely flexible and the ligaments very lax. Only the joints my right side are affected, including my wrist, elbow, shoulder, knee, ankle, etc. My right hip is extremely flexible, as was noticed in yoga and pilates. I had to use the lines in class to keep myself from overextending when I turned to the right.
Doctors kept focusing on the scoliosis; I knew I carried some of the Fragile X gene & went for genetic counseling. I later brought my daughter in for genetic counseling when she developed scoliosis--within minutes of determining that we BOTH have flat feet, same curvature, hyperextendible right hip, calf pain, etc. that he immediately diagnosed us with EDS.
The pelvic plates surrounding the sciatic nerve are held together by ligaments. My ligaments don't do the job, so my right hip routinely rides up. The chiropractor can easily put it back in place.
An orthopedist should check your pelvic crest notches to see if they are level. If not, a GOOD physical therapist can teach you excercises to strengthen your muscles. Good luck.
I have been in pain for seven months, seen five doctors, had five cortisone shots and one numbing shot, and nothing worked. I finally went to a chiropractor and asked her to recommend a neurosurgeon in another town. He told me to quit smoking and get a CTA, so I did both. I haven't had a cigarette in a month, and that didn't help the butt pain. The CTA showed signs of some plaque buildup, but my regular physician said not enough to cause the pain, and if I still hurt in 6 months, he'd send me to a pain management doctor. I called the neurosurgeon back, and he's scheduled a EMG and possibly a myelogram; what fun. I can't sit down for more than ten minutes without my buttocks (both now) hurting; my lower back and left side are aching and sensitive to the touch; my left heel hurts. I just want someone to tell me what's wrong and how to fix it.
Can't tell last poster what is wrong but I can say what is right. You did great be quitting smoking. No it won't make you feel better today but it will in the long run. Smoking does deplete your body of vitamins and other healing agents including oxegin(SP?) It does daily damage which in the long run does permanent damage to your body, not just your lungs. Doctor don't like to do surgeries on people that smoke because their healing is not as good as a non-smoker. Again I mention the PIRIFORMIS MUSCLE and see a good physical therapist if you haven't already. A Myleagram will show anything abnormal but I had one done in 1985 and I had a Myleagram Migraine for almost a month. Make sure that the nurses that care for you afterwards KNOWS what level your head should be in the bed! The actual test was scary (I was only 25) but not really painful. They drug you into a dreamlike state so you are relaxed. Good luck with your search and recovery.
I had pain in my left heel on and off for the last 5 years due to Plantar faciatis.I wear orthodics and that really has helped that. I also have pain in my left butt. I had sciatica on the right side and down my leg for several months after I slipped on the stairs and fell on my right side and now the pain has moved to the left butt cheek. I did everything except acupuncture. I had a MRI and it showed I had spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal cord causing a pinched nerve along with degenerative disc disease. I had a steroid shot and it didn't help much. I have been trying to strengthen my abdominal muscles and so far it is helping. I went to physical therapy but it hurt me for three days after wards worst so I stopped going. I had a deep tissue message that hurt for 2 months afterward. I went to a chiropractor and all they wanted to do was treat my head leaning forward with traction. What a mess it's been for almost 2 years. I was scheduled to have back surgery to fuse L4, L5 and S1 but have now put it off until later in the year to give the abdominal strengthening more time.
Maybe you should get a MRI to make sure your spine is okay and that you don't have a pinched nerve.
16 days a go I was changing the bag in my trash can and I went down burning around the waist and I had to crawl to get my husband , I have been walking on a cane but I have sence left it at home and been going to the Chiropractor for 8 adjustments ...I'm hurting so bad at night and day I hurt but night I hurt so bad I feel I'm going to the hospital ...I take aleve every 2 1/2 to 3 hours have been for 16 days along with ice packs and heat ...the Chiropractor informed me I had taken a fall and I didn't remember until later i had fell on ice and he said this is the result that over the months my whole spine neck had shifted and needs to be back in place ..I have felt some relief but i worry about all the alee and could it be something else he took xrays and it showed my spine & neck out of form ... also the pain is rally bad in my right knee i also feels as if it's not my knee & leg almost as if asleep but pain there too..Please if anyone knows what can be done help me
I had a hip replacement a few years ago and about 2 months ago i was pushing something and i used my hip and i felt a slight shift in my hip it gave me a quick little pain at first but ever since then I have had trouble sitting, the muscles at the top and in the middle of my buttocks hurt. sometimes it seems to shift.I have a lot of pressure at the top of my hip when i am sitting, feels like the ball wants to push out of my leg.I had it x rayed and the emergency room doctor said the replacement looked good, and he gave me muscle relaxers and said if that did not help to see my orthodontist and needless to say that did not help I am still having a lot of pain while sitting and now i can not walk very far without all of the muscles around my hips starts tightening up and i have to stop walking, I need help. I just moved to another state and down here the specialist wants one thousand dollars upfront since i do not have any insurance. Thanks to the economy I am also unemployed and not elgible for medicare. Can you help me?
Hi, I am so sorry that your having so much pain. I am not really familiar with hip replacment but when I looked up some articles on it they all seem to say the same thing. I believe you may have had a displacment. I can't tell you anything to fix it unfortunatly though. You need to apply for Medicad in your state for medical assistence. In theis day and time a thousand dollars is alot of money and when your not working it is alot. Every state has a Medicad system for those who have no insurance and need medical care. Call your local human resource office or state medicad office and get the paper work started so you can get into see a doctor. Also you could try the ER again as they do have different doctors all the time and you may get a doctor that is more familiar with hip replacment and know how to help you. I wish I could do more for you. It is really tough living in pain and have no medical help. If you need some help finding your local Medicad office please let me know and I will help you all I can. Others will post too. I know we have some members who have had this procedure and they may have more advice to offer you. I think if it were a muscle strain you would be feeling better by now. Keep us updated and let us know how we can help you:)
Look at the kind of shoes you are wearing daily. If you can get online or find a store that sells "Hafflinger" clogs. I too am having horrible foot and leg pain. I am much older than you and have other spine issues. However my foot doc said if everyone would just wear the right shoe there would be less foot problems and back pain. He highly recommends this shoe and even the slippers. He said never be in bare feet. I can't tell you how much they've helped me. So perhaps getting this shoe, living in, do not go bare foot, look up stretching exercises for low back and foot pain. Do it religiously for a few months and see if this helps. Best of luck. I always tell everyone about this cream I never go without. "Nutra Face, Neck, Joint, Skin Ultra Relief" look up Nutra Research. It is the BEST topical cream for pain.
I have had a really bad burning pain in my left butt cheek that goes down the outside of my left thigh down the outside and back of my calf and then to the outside of my ankle. If I sit down for to long it takes me about 10 min to get where I can walk comfortably, if I stand up to long it takes me about 20 min till I can sit without pain. I don know what is wrong. Any help?
