calf and back of leg pain

Hi! Im trying to find a forum that fits my question...I posted in a diff one last night..no answer. I have pain from the back of my calf muscle radiating UP to my hamstring..when I walk. I took myself to the ER last night..of course I was thinking the worst...DVT..blood clots, since i sit 8 hrs a day at work. They did blood work, and checked me out, pronounced me fine and that was that. Well, I am in pain today! I am a sendary person pretty much...I do take 8 flights of stairs down from work each day..and do some walking to and from work..but thats about it. so this isnt an exercise related injury...I cannot find ANY info anywhere on the internet. The ER doctor, once he ruled out anything serious, pretty much pushed me out the door--they were really busy and had multiple crisis patients at once. So today I am left wondering what is wrong...and what to do about it! Ice? Heat? The whole length of my leg?! My calf is really the sore area...but I feel it behind my thigh as well...about a 5 on a 1-10 scale. Any words of wisdom for me?

my husband was suffering from some siatic nerve pain at times(running down the entire back of his leg) and calf pain at random times with no injury attached to it, and the doctors never have been able to tell him what it is other than it being a chronic condition that now comes and goes.  He won't eat bananas but he discovered drinking lots of water and taking vitamins with magnesium in them helps lesson the frequency and intensity of them.  Hope this helps.

I would consider going to a chiropractor i use to step  crooked when the muddy tread marks got  dried out i would twist my knee or ankle and not realize  it until i tried to step again and i felt like my foot or knee would give out , are you a high heel or flat shoe person lots of times you need to change your footwear or try  one shoe on one shoe off  now i swear by absorbine jr its near the benegay stuff i like blue stuff emu base , or biofreeze  if you can sit down in a chair and with your hand try to make circles with your ankle  it should snap an pop  if its out of alignment which can cause this burning sensation  or hold your knee cap with your finger tips and swing your knee out you may feel something move  its amazin how a little thing can cause such grief for our bodies  drinking propel gatorade stuff might help try tonic water with quionine  you could be lacking or dehydrated i am experiencing  left leg calf cramps i had a low vit d   so you can try this its at walmart

i had a similar sounding complaint which finally got worse and worse and turned out to be a prolapsed disk pressing on the sciatic nerve. this didnt show up on an x-ray but did on a scan. what helped me was to put an ice pack on the base of my spine for about 10 - 15 minutes and then apply a heat rub (tiger balm, heatol etc). Try resting and no impact activities. i didnt rest and ended up on my back for 7 months but luckily no surgery just a steroid epidural.
hope this is of any help

Did you get xrays? It could be an injury even though you may not be able to pinpoint it you could have been hurt climbing stairs or even bending over the wrong way. I know of a guy who ruptured several disc in his back and neck by simply bending over to pick up a chlds toy. It is very easy to hurt yourself and not even realize you have done so. I would recommend more test and maybe a orthopedist. ( for gve my spelling spell check is not working). I would seek some help though even if you just go to your PCP.
I do hope your feeling better soon!

Oh you may also want to eat some bannanas of another food with high potassium because it helps keep your muscles healthy while you wait to see your DR and drink alot of water incase your dehydrated.
Dehydration can cause alot of muscle and joint pain,

Hi palps

Have you been able to make an app. with your DR?
My first thought before you said it wasnt exersize related was that you pulled your hamstring or muscle somehow.
Even if you exersize everyday and work the muscles often its possible to still injur it without knowing.

My advice is to have your DR look at it and in the mean time get some epsom salts and dissolve them in a hot bath and soak in it. Epsom salts are known to reduce pain and will relax your muscles.
See what it feels like with ice pack as ice will help reuce inflammation after a hot bath.
But your DR will be able to look into better than the ER and let you know what he thinks. Whether its a pulled muscle or hamstring or whether he things you may want to see a specialist who can do further tests.

I hope you feel better soon
