And have benn trying differant kinds of extended release meds and vommit and have some allergic reactions from all of them so far . Im trying all the meds on my formulary first because they are covered .But i have just tried hydromorphone 4mg tabs the last med left on my formulary and it doesnt make me sick . But its not extended release would my pm doctor be aloud to prescribe two instant release meds if they are effective in managing my pain ? im SCARED TO ASK HIM . can anyone please give me some advice .

I prefer diladid to oxycontin myself I dont have cancer, I am in Indiana not ohio. I don't see why everyone wants oxycontin for me it doesn't work that well. But I didn't know there was a long acting form.

I have heard of a doctor asking for the remainder of meds. My "other half" had to do this on several occasions while they tried to find something that worked. The doctor just wrote a note to the pharmacy stating that they had been returned.

No i have never heard of a Dr. asking for the return on a prescribed med.  I have had Dr. tell me to discontinue use of a med before taking another, but never asking for them back, something does not sound right.

And ive only tried oxy ir  and hydromorphone since i cant have anything containing acetemenphine etc due to my stomach ulcers .But ive tried fentanyl duragesic 25 mcg , ms contin 15mg ,5mg opana er non crushable, and 5mg methadone .But reacted badly to each one of them  :( MY HOSPITAL INS doesnt cover very many pain meds and that pretty much all of them . So i have to get authorized for anything else which is not good because of the condition im in ;(

Thankyou for the info , my pm doc just gave me a 3 day supply of the hydromorphone to try for the weekend to see if my stomach accepts it or not . this past week he had me try methadone and i was vommiting so bad that i pulled somethhing in my back and had to go to the er and get it checked it was just the muscles that spsmed real bad .
But that same day he gave me the hydromorphone to try .I didnt get sick from it but it only gave me a  little bit more relief for a little bit longer than the 30 mg of oxycodone ir i usually take .Meanwhile while im trying find a med that works better my reg script is the oxycodone . ive been in pm with the same doc for almost two years now .So im just now getting comfortable with him but it is hard to get in direct contact with him and his nurses are always giving me problems and not doing there jobs like they should so it is making things alot harder for me .
Tommorow im just gonna go to his office to talk to him instead of waiting around just for his nurses to talk to me and suffering with inadequate meds which i have benn dfealing with for about a month now .I dont have an appointment but i have to look out for myself if they cant make things easier for me like they should be doing .  But ill take your advice and be more strait foeward with him .

Just wanted to add that it's an insurance company that does prior authorizations...a Pharmacist would only call (insurance) them if this is required by your insurance company.

And as I wrote earlier...there are actually more laws/regulations about not using short acting medications for more than 3-6 months as this moves someone from the "acute" pain phase to the "chronic" pain phase. So, many states are now requiring that Drs. move their patients to long acting medications.

The only red flag that a Dr. has is if a patient is only asking about opiates for their pain and not being open to other modalities for their pain relief...

Again...I wish you luck...when do you see your Dr. next?

Thanks for sharing more...I'm still confused on the part that if your Dr. is prescribing both the Oxycodone and the Hydromophone...then I don't understand the fear of speaking to them. I don't see what you could say that is the" wrong" thing. If you have been seeing this Dr. for some time now you can just talk to them about what is working and isn't working for your pain control.

Ohio does not have any law...nor do any of the states that Oxycontin or any long acting med is "only" for cancer patients. I know quite a few people from Ohio who are prescribed Oxycontin.

I'm not sure why you would ask your Pharmacist about the Oxycontin...they have nothing to do with what your Dr. prescribes. Talk to your Dr. about the Oxycontin.

Again..it's the exact same medication as in Oxycodone immediate release. So it is very natural if you are needing so many short acting meds per day that they would move you to a long acting one.

People like us who take our meds as prescribed have absolutely no reason to fear Drs. or talking to them...

I wish you luck:)

I dont try and go through other docs i only go through my pm doc and i also have a contract so it would be impossible to do that in my state anyways . but thankyou for the info . Although i have thought about what you mentioned , it would make alot of sense to prescribe the extended release form of the med that doesnt give me problems instead of goin through all these differant pain meds and wasting time while im still suffering meanwhile .But i guess in this state oxycontin is highly frowned upon unless you have cancer . Plus every time i have to try another med i have to wait for the prior authorzation which takes 3 days . :(

Well i talked to the head pharmicist who handles prior authorizations and he said that oxycontin is usually only prescribed to stage 4 cancer patients . Im from ohio and i think the laws are a little differant when it comes to prescription meds .

Dont get me confused with the drug addicts , and i know the law but thankyou for your input . And im nervous to ask because i know sometimes if you say the wrong things or ask the wrong way sometimes doctors take it the wrong way .

I guess I'm confused on how you tried the Hydromorphone if the Dr. isn't the one who prescribed this to you?

Have all the extended release meds you have tried prescribed by him?

If you are taking meds that are not prescribed to you, this is actually a felony for both you and the person who is lending/selling these to you.

If your Dr. calls you in for a random urine test and finds medication not prescribed in your system, then you can be dismissed immediately without anymore medication and then have a mark on your record where no other Dr. will prescribe pain meds to you.

If I misunderstood your post then I apologize but the part where you say you are "scared" to talk with him is what makes me think that he didn't prescribe them to you.

The answer to your question in a general sense is it is not likely that a Dr. will prescribe two short acting meds at the same time.

If you have been fine on 6 Oxycodone a day without getting sick but it just being that it's not enough pain relief...then I don't understand why Oxycontin wouldn't work for you. It's the exact same medication just in a time released formula. So you shouldn't get sick from Oxycontin unless you take it the wrong way and crush/chew the med releasing the medication too fast into your system.

You need to speak with your Dr. about all of this because it's also not good to try and see another Dr. to get a prescription for an opiate as that would be considered "Dr. shopping".

I hope that you can work with your Dr. to get things straightened out soon.

The best thing to do is consult your Dr. , but if you are scared to ask him a pharmacist is also a great source of information, but you need to cowboy up and talk to your Dr. about this.
