catheter pain

I have a friend with MS- her insertion pain ( required 3-4 times a day) is excruciating. She is also in recovery. And indigent.-
short of ITDD mechanism-( I should mention all topical solutions have been exhausted- to our knowledge) are there any analgesics available? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
