i took too many sleeping pills i called poison control hours ago and they said i be fine but i'm having chest pains and was wondering how long they would last

Well, if you panicked, you would be able to perpetuate your pain for hour after hour. In any event, theres a great way to tell if chest pain is benign; apply gentle pressure across your chest, and on your sides. This is to see if the pain is in the chest wall, rather than anything like a heart or lung thing.

Its most obvious for me a couple inches below my left shoulder, on the side.

You will know it when you feel it Chest wall pain is disturbing but cant harm you. Its just a reaction to stress, since you probably got upset. Still, if it becomes anything major, a doctor would be a good idea.

You should always seek emergency care if you are having chest pains as it could mean that you are having a heart attack.  The quicker paramedics can administer the appropriate medications, the less damage there will be to your heart.  I hope that you have sought emergency care by now.  Please update us on how you are doing.
