Hi mfgibson22.
Sounds like TMS ( tension myositis syndrome).
If you would like a link to a 2 Hour video Lecture, including treatment,
by the expert in this field, Dr. John Sarno, send me a personal message.
Best wishes!

Focus on keeping your shoulders down... When your neck hurt you want to lift them but it makes it worse. Alternate heat and ice 20 minutes at a time... Moist heat is the best, like a flax seed bag, so if you have to go purchase a heating pad, look for the one that says moist heat. Also, you can purchase a soft cervical collar from the pharmacy for only a few buck wear it whenever you are not laying down. It'll help the muscles to relax. When the pain calms down some try stretching it gently using only 2 fingers for pressure. Then put your right hand on the right side for resistance and lean your head into it. Then move the hand towards you temple for resistance and turn your head towards it. Repeat this on the other side about 4 times a day.
It's not a quick fix but it'll feel a lot better in a day or two. Good luck. Keep us posted.
