false negative drug screen

I am devastated that I recently failed a drug test at work. I believe it is a false negative. I donot take any meds except for blood pressure. I have alot of sinus and arthritis pains.I do take alot of ibiprofin,alieve,advil,goody powders. I also have digestive problems and am very dehydrated all the time. Is this something that could be my reason for failing? And if so what can I do to keep my job?

I have heard that if you eat high amounts of poppy seeds it can show up as an opiate. In fact, I know of a person who did not get hired because her test tested positive after she ingested a lemon poppy seed muffin, she appealed and ultimately got her job but the hoops she had to jump through were crazy. A large bagel with poppy seeds could also create a false positive. I know there are several other ways to test positive without taking the drug.

I tested negative for opiates and took 2 tabs just hours before the test was administered.

I have been in PM for 8 years and currently take Oxycodone (high dose) and this did not show on a Pre-employmentdrug screen.

Its very confusing

Hello Sugar,

Welcome to the Pain Mangement Forum. Based on the medications you currently ingest there is nothing that should have made a false positive.I admit I do not know what goody powders contain.  

Dehydration will not effect a drug screen either. It is not rare for a urine drug screen to be in error. Unfortunately like so many other ppl that have erroneous drug screen there really is no recourse for you. I wish I had better answers for you.

Talk to the HR Department or your boss. Ask for more information. I too am curious as to what was found in your urine. Good luck to you.

Hi Sugar:

What did the drug screen say you had in ingested? If you had gone to the Dentist and had Novocaine, the test will initially show up as cocaine until a more sensitive test is done to rule novocaine out. Other than that, if you say that you,ve absolutely had nothing except and asprin then the test should have come out clean. I have never had a problem in the 12 years as a School Bus Driver with a drug screen coming out positive for anything. So, I don't know the answer to your question.....
