headaches

Hello everyone... Im new to all of this and thankful I found it!  I have had bad headaches for years and some say its stress and others have told me that I need to get a scan done ... but I dont have the money or insurance to even go to the doctor about everything I have.  So my headaches are generally on the top and forehead and my temples and they hurt so bad I can cry and to be honest sometimes I do.  My regular doctor has me on Lyrica for my nerve pain and back pain but it doesnt help much and DOES NOT help my headaches.  I dont think they are migranes but dont know and so my question is ... does anyone know what kind of medicine would be good for real bad headaches?  Please if anyone knows of anything I can try or do ... please let me know.  Thank you!

Thanks for the info...I have never heard of rebound headaches...wow.  Learn something new everyday, huh?  I dont take to much of the otc medicine cause it upsets my stomach to much so I only take it when absolutely have to.  I have tried cool washcloths and warm heating pads and this and that.. some makes me relax more but the pain is still there.  The Lyrica isnt helping my back pain much so I might ask him for something that will take care of my headaches and my back pain.... if there is anything.  So then maybe it wont be so expensive buying this and that for different medicine.  But I will have to talk to him.  Thanks to all that is helping me with this!

Hi,

Headaches can really suck... and they can be really hard to treat as well. However there are a few things you can do to try and make things better and get ahead (because what I'm going to tell you is most likely what the doctor is going to ask you to do after your appt.)

1. First, are you taking an OTC meds currently? If you are, how often are you taking them... generally they should only be taken 2 times a week at the most otherwise they can cause rebound headaches... which are headaches that you get when you don't that the OTC meds.

2. Start a headache diary. Write down the time the headache started, how long it lasted, what you did to try and treat it (meds, heat, cold...), anything you think may have triggered the headache, what type of pain the headache was (throbbing, puslating, ice pick, tight...), where the pain was located and how bad the pain was on a 1-10 scale.

Good luck... of and few days ago I believe a dr here on med help posted some info on headaches/migranes... I'll go find the link and post it here for you there will be even more info there for you.

I have frequent migraines and I do take Maxalt and fiornail.  They both work well for my headaches.  The Maxalt is very expensive, even with medical insurance.  I've heard that magnesium will help with the headaches as well, but be sure to check with your doctor first.

Hi Jazzmin,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I am glad that you found us but sorry to hear about your headaches.

There are so many medications available now for headaches and migraines. It use to be that there were just a few similar medications. However now there are several treatment approaches along with different types of medications. These are mainly based on the type and cause of the headache or migraine.

I am sorry I cannot be more specific. There just seems to be no simply, one solution for headaches. I assume you have tried all the OTC medications.

I suggest that you the severity of your headaches and the way the disrupt your life with the physician that prescribes the lyrica for you. If you explain your lack of insurance and the pain of your headaches he may be helpful.

There is a Headache/Migraine Forum on MH of you would like to post there in addition to our forum. Weekends can be a bit slow in posts and responses so it may take a bit. Best of luck to you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.

Good luck and take care, Tuck.
