Pharmacist are usually very helpful, astute and concerned... if they aren't we should all remember we can easily go elsewhere!!

You were on a HUGE amount of medications, indeed I have not heard of those amounts in those combinations. In my opinion you are blessed that you are no longer taking them and that you are still breathing. How frightening!

What opiates do (without going into a lot of detailed medical jargon) is effect the Respiratory Center in our brain. This area automates our respiration, telling us to breath.... Opiates depress that center and in overdose represses that area... or forgets to tell out bodies to breath... The automation function gets shut off!

No one should stop taking physician ordered opiates because of this thread but we should all be aware of the potential hazards and if in doubt or concerned check with your Pharmacist and/or prescribing Physician.

I also agree with tuckamore consult the pharmacy. As I have a pain managment dr who is a workers comp dr and I really don't think he gives a sh@t or has time to check through my files to see all the meds and mg and quantity's I'm taking. Prior to having my first surgery I was in a bad way lots of severe pain couldn't sleep was taking oxycontin 80mg 12 a day soma, vicodin. 10/325 10 to 12 a day ambein 3 at bed time gaba pentin 1200mg atavain some type of an anti depressent and something else I can't recall. An my wife and I were kinda the same way well more so my wife she was worried she was going to find me cold not breathing dead in bed or on the couch because of the meds. DR said to just not take the oxy right at bedtime. Well the a little while went by and I started waking with shorthness of breath. I'd wake up and have to catch my breath at first I just tried easing back on some of the meds at bed time but I guess it was just the combination of pain meds and sleep meds and anti depressants .the episodes of shortness of breath got to the point I woke up gasping for air an was still having a hard time getting it.That was the big wake up call and after that I pretty much stopped taking everything but my oxycontin. I Have terrible nights of no sleep but I like breathing I haven't had shortness of breat since I stopped taking all of those meds.and the dr telling me to space them out an hour or so what an idiot and that's pretty much what the phamicist said in so many words good luck and if your leary check in to. Your intuition is usaully never wrong.

Hi Teresa,

I understand your fright and concern. I am leery of medications also. I get it!

I have seen these medications ordered together. I really think it would help for you to talk to your local Pharmacist.... the one that fills your prescriptions. They are usually so informative and truly are the experts in medications. They are well educated in how each medication acts and how they interact with other medications. Actually they are usually even more educated and knowledgeable in this arena then most physicians.

I have had similar discussions with my Pharmacist and have never been disappointed. Obviously I try to wait until they are less busy so they can give me their time and attention, with less distractions. I avoid Mondays and Fridays and the hours of 3-6PM.

I hope this helps. Please let us know what you discover. We're here to offer our support. I know how frightening new medications can seem, especially when there are many.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Teresa,

Did your physician prescribe these to be taken together?? Please don't follow anyone's medication advice other then that of your Physician or Pharmacist.

If you have questions regarding your medications, when or how to take them.... those questions/concerns should be directed at the physician that prescribed them for you. I hope you will give them a call.

What's safe for me or someone else may not be safe for you. Some will depend on your past medications, ie how tolerant your system is, as well as all the medications you are taking... So again give your provider a call.

Best of Luck,
~Tuck
