muscle relaxers

I fell at work a few months ago and was giving Davon 100mg for the pain. But lately I have been having a lot more pain that the Davon is not helping. Like today i am having sharp pains in my left shoulder area; to where it is hard to breath. I was wondering if I should be taking a muscle relaxers instead when this happens. I will be in Pt in a week, but for now i need something.

Hi Patricia,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. Your post does not give a lot of detail. If we knew a bit more we may be able to offer better suggestions. I am sorry that you are experiencing pain.

What did you injure when you fell? If it was not related to your shoulder than you should be concerned with left shoulder pain for a number of reasons. You said that it hard to breath. Do you mean the pain takes your breath away or are you having shortness of breath or inability to obtain enough oxygen?

If you are having trouble getting enough oxygen along with the left shoulder pain you need to seek medical treatment immediately. This could be cardiac related.

If you initially injured your left shoulder and the pain is becoming worse than I suggest you return to your physician. Additional testing may be required to determine if you sustained a more severe injury than was originally diagnosed. Darvon is the least potent narcotic your physician could have prescribed. A muscle relaxant will only be effective if your muscles are in spasms.

I suggest you contact your physician before you begin PT and explain to him how you are feeling, or better yet make an appointment. PT will bring more pain as you strength those injured structures and muscles. Best of luck to you. I hope you will keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.
Peace, Tuck

I agree with Nick. I think there may be something more going on. Pain in the left side of the shoulder or arm and having difficulty breathing may mean that your experiencing heart related problems and that is concern enough to have it checked out immediately.

Are you experiencing any other symptoms besides the pain and breathing? At any rate, please have it checked out immediately. Take care,
Mollyrae

Hi there,
are the new symptoms the same ones that were caused by your original fall? if not then i suggest that a dr is in order. also, you should probably not take the davon for other pain problems, only the ones it was prescribed for.
any breathing difficulties should be an immeadiate concern for you.
please discuss these issues with your dr.
I'm not trying to be too preachy or anything but davon is quite weak and unless you have  a diagnosis of something that justifies stronger meds, then i suggest you see your dr and talk to him about it.
how badly did you originally hurt yourself? has that injury recovered?
I'm only asking because there wasn't a lot of detail in your post, if you could provide more of a background it might be easier to understand your situation.
I hope you are treated adequately.

Nick
