Hi Ash and welcome,
It could also be myofascial pain syndrome. I have the same issues due to this condition. The pain from this condition is caused by tight muscle bands around the numerous trigger points in the region.
I would recommend self-accupressure. You will need to purchase a Theracane to perform the self-accupressure. They are relatively cheap. Google "Theracane" and many online retailers will pop up that have them available for purchase. I received mines when I was going through physical therapy.
The theracane allows a person to apply deep pressure to break up those bands of muscle tissue and thus significantly reduce the pain. You may need to conduct the therapy more frequently at first as the bands of muscle are initially more resistant but over time, it becomes easier to get rid off.
Best of luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Muscle Strain. I'm assuming these are not knots above the skin, but in the muscles. First, try 20 minutes of ice followed by 20 minutes without anything followed by 20 minutes of moist heat. Repeat a couple times. If the knots go away, they are probably caused by muscle strain. If they come back, repeat the ice/moist heat therapy. [Do NOT put ice directly on your skin, and do NOT put a dry heating pad directly on your skin. Use only MOIST heat ... put a damp rag between the heating pad and your skin.]
If this helps but the knots keep returning, find an Orthospinologist Chiropractor. Read up on them if you have doubts.
