negative result despite taking meds and patch was currently on

I was on oxycodone 5mg and a fentanyl patch 12 mcg per hour my doc had me give a urine sample which i could have refused but thought I had nothing to hide.  2 weeks later I went in and he told me that my results were negative for both meds and my anxiety med that I take 1-3 times daily he said he had to discharge me. i begged him to give me another test and showed him that I had my patch on. they let me give another urine sample which again was negative.  they said they could not prescribe me any more but did find a place that would take blood for a serum drug test.  what withdrawls symptoms will occur  and why would they not show up in my urine.  after 7 years I finally found the right meds that did not make me sick and now they are taken away.  I understand on their end why they can't but I don't understand the negative results. any ideas why this happened or any one who has experianced this would help.

Oh my god! I seriously thought i was the only person this happens to! I went to the emergency room after taking 200mcgs of fentynal and had one in my mouth when they did a supposed full panel on me. The results were only positive for benzos. I told the er doc to hold his hand out and pulled the chewed up patch out of my mouth ( which was in there for 4 hours) i placed it in his hand and he said oh ****! i also told him this **** happens to me all the time when i relapse, so i spit in the urine. Yet the test never showed up for opiods. This happens every time i relapse and i am incorrectly given wrong tapering meds to deal with withdrawls. I am also an insulin dependant diabetic since the age of 3. someone told me that diabetics rapidly process chemicals in the body and this is the reason for it happening. im still baffled by this and why my tests always show up negative.

I'm in this hellish boat too. Fentanyl 25mcg/hr and oxycodone and somehow I test negative for opiates. That isn't even the worst of it. I'm not looking for pity, just answers. I have young children that want their mommy to come back. Thanks.

fentanly is a synthetic opiate.  Your pain management should know it will not show up when tested for opiates.  I should know, it happened to me too

I am having the same issue with my 10-325 Percocet not showing up in my is. My PM Dr says I need to have genetic testing done to see if I have enzymes that cause this. Is this a possibility? My ua's only show metabolites and not the drug this is why he is going to stop the scripts.  After 5yrs of being told nothing is wrong and then Dr realizing there is this is unbelievable. PM Dr told me he would send me back to the chiropractor, physical therapy, and give me a RX for muscle relaxes.

Molly, I also need the journal location. My wife has false negative results in drug testing. We know for certain she is taking hydrocodone on a regular basis everyday. Her doctor appaers to imply , because of negative drug tests, she may be selling!! My wife is and has been disabled for many years due osteoporosis, diverticulosis, IBS, stenosis, arthritus, asthma, degenerating cartlidge in knees, sleep apnea, etc.. Actually the prescription for the Hydrocodone says take every 6 to 8 hrs. She cannot take that often as it basically knocks her out.. She takes instead one time per day before bedtime. The strength is 5.350 mg....Why is the drug test negative when she is taking her meds. Please help!!!!!!

First of all, I am so sorry for your difficulties. I wish I knew what area you lived, in that I have a prince of a management doc whom I have used for years.  I am unable to see him anymore due to distance problems.  He heard me, while listening, he trusted me that I was telling the truth.  I had to change my doc and I am afraid that he is going to play god junior on me.  Oh well...I have fired doctors before, and I can do it again.
I have read the majority of your posts and you are forgetting that he works for you. I know it is easier said than done, but you are giving him the power over you.  Contact your state's Medical Assn, make a stink, contact the BBB, you would not believe how much an impact thay can make.   Sorry, I am a child of the 60s and tend to lead with the weapon of information and confidence.  Besides...doctors tend not to pxxx off old people.
As it has been stated, many docs are scared to death to have any seeming  impropriety in narcotic prescribing.  You can blame the "just say no" program for this one.
Might I suggest (as I was one) speak to some nurses about this, friends you might have, see who is out there.
I do sympathize with you.  Drug level tests are about as reliable as some pregnancy tests.

Not sure why the oxy didnt show, but I have heard people say that only special tests can detect the patch. I had a drug test after being on the fentanlylpatch for over 3 weeks and it did not show up. Granted is was a simple test designed for marijuana detection. Yes Im on probation for marijuana, the porbation officer knows Im on the patch and was quite perplexed when it didnt show up, meaning the fentanyl. He saw it on my arm and I filled the sample jar while he watched. Go figure...Id take a pill right in front of your doctor and then have him test you the next day, sounds crazy, but then again, this entire thing sounds crazy..Good luck and hang in there

i am also having a negative ua and blood serum results.  i am prescribed to take the 25 level fentanyl patch every 48 hours.  My Dr. has done the ua tests 3 times at my request because I am trying to prove my innocence.  I have been on these medications for 7 years, and have been accused to selling my meds for the last 4 months.  She tells me this is the last time she can prescribe them.  I am also going to be looking for a new pmp through my old physician.  I have never had this, I am angry, and confused.  I am glad though that I have found this website so I can take factual information to the clinic so they can look into providing better tests to their patients.

You were tested wrong..all wrong.  Next time as for them to send out for a full tox screen test on you.  In house urines are NOT reliable...Not every for a urinary tract infection trust
me I know as I had one/came back neg then I convulsed and almost died because I was not treated.  I'd report the doctor as if we just ignore this stuff none of us will be treated properly, legally, and most of all aid in our healing.  Don't even put this doctor down as one you'd seen.  We have this Privacy thing right..Yet all these doctors violate this and judge us.  Why?  Because there are alot ALOT of folks out there messing up a good pain management arrangement so we can survive to live as best we can by abusing, selling, and then it's on 20/20 and we're all cooked.. Good luck.

I agree you really need to find another pain dr. And you should always be upfront with your drs. It is also a good idea to try to have the urine test in the hosptial when they see you take them meds and see what the tests says that way in the furture this dont happen again.
Hang in there, I know this has to be so hard on you and i know your very worried but try to find another pain dr so you don't have to go without your meds.

You need to see a lawer, this happened to me once, i took my hydro 7.5 3x a day and my ua came back clean, no drugs. I couldn't belive it, but i wrongly assumed the Dr. knew what might happen on a ua... WRONG! Me and God know i took my medicine i have too just to survive, well, i called that place back and said bye bye. Went to my pcp and had found my own pain clinic and ask him to refer me, he did. You don't have to take records of bad ua's, just medical info. anyway i did some research and the first Dr. that i had the clean ua with had sent me for an employment ua...big difference, the cutoff for hydro was 2000, for pt. compliance the cutoff has to be way lower. Also, drugs DO NOT STAY IN YOUR SYSTEM FOR 30 DAYS...fact.  And they could have sent your test for a gs/ms which will test limit of detection, that means as low as it goes, and it would have showed up. I have found that alot of DR's do not do their homework on pt. compliance testing. So you prob. know more about it than he does. You go back, not as a pt. but as an informed person and give him what for, and tell him he's dealing with peoples lives, so he needs to take a class on urine drug testing. And tell him your lawer is aware of the situation, even if you don't have one. And if you can't bring yourself to go back write him a letter. These Dr's are making a killing off sick people like us and it's time we stand up for ourselves. I'm a quiet person also, but i'm sick of being jerked around like i'm a criminal as i'm sure you are also. Good Luck I'm With ya Sister.

Mollyrae is correct in thinking the doctor was just looking to dismiss you.
Try and find a new PM doctor. I know it is frustrating but hang in there.
