pain behind the right knew, goes upward to upper back leg, just recently, happened, age and weight may be part of it, but what to do to relieve it

You need to see your Doctor and find the cause of the pain to treat it properly. If you feel like weight issues are causing the pain to be worse you should also mention this to your Doctor as heshe can help with that too.
In the meantime you can try heat or ice to see if that relieves some of the pain.
