pain

I broke my calcaneousabout 9 years ago.  They chose not to do surgery on my heel due to insurance.  So I was in what I call a terminator boot and crutches for about9 months.  I am now a server and the side and back of my heel and ankle hurt so bad.  I can not walk sometimes it takes about 2 minutes for the pain to go away.  So I would like to know how to deal with this. Or is there any type of exercise to help?   Thank you

Hi, and welcome.  Foot pain is NO fun.  I have ms and other diseases and one of my newer problems is foot drop.  It's been coming and getting worse over time, but is now so bad it has to be braced.  My Achilles tendon is shortened due to a weak muscle in my leg preventing me from being able to lift my foot.  Anyway, being in the "terminator boot" would cause severe stiffness and immobility for long enough that you may suffer from Achilles tendon shortening too.  It would make sense.  I would suggest that you do stretching exercises to lengthen the tendon gradually.  Pull up on your foot (ball of foot and toes) slowly toward your shin.  Hold it and then release.  Do this several times until you feel the stretch.  It should gradually get it back to "normal".  There are other tendons and ligaments in your foot that may have been affected as well.  Try to do the stretching when the foot is warm, like in a warm bath.  Or just soak your foot in a tub of warm water and do the stretches there.  Do you wear any kind of ankle support?  They have great ace brand supports for the ankle that offer more support than you'd realize.  Another stretch exercise is to stand, then, with your body supported with a chair, or wall, bend your knee, keeping your foot flat on the ground, so that your Achilles tendon is stretched.  Bend just far enough to feel the pull, hold and release.

I hope these help.  I also hope you gradually get better.  Your new job is going to tax you for sure!

Blessings, Jan

Hi Gemini,

Welcome to the Pain Mangement Forum. I am sorry that you are having pain and were not able to obtain the correct treatment when your initial injury occurred.

I know little about your injury. I do suggest that you consult with your PCP. He/she may be able to provide a better direction or refer you to a specialist that can help. Obviously the usual can be done until you see your PCP. RICE, rest, ice, compression (wrap) and elevate when you can. Also some OTC NSAID's can be helpful unless they are contraindicated.

Others will post with their suggestions. Please let us know how you are doing. Take care and best of luck to you, Tuck
