right butt cheek pain

Hi, I'm new here (first post). About 3 weeks ago I had a sharp pain on the right side of my butt for a day or so which I blamed on poor form doing an exercise . When it went away I had a even more severe pain on the right side in the back middle of the right side of my butt where the big muscle goes down the middle. I could move my leg in any position which very little or no pain including doing exercises. This went on for 5 days or so. Then it got real bad. When I would stand up It was a severe disabling pain in the area described. It hurt to stand or take a step. If I just rested my right hand on the counter on something it was much better but not gone while I walked. For a couple of days most of the time I had to use crutches but at the end of the 2nd day I was on a ladder washing windows. I went to the dr and he said sciatica pain and took xrays and then he said some degenerative arthritis. I know I have arthritis and this is not that--it is more of a shooting pain like a cramp or pulling in the area. I am very active (ff/pm and work at a public works dept). As I think back I've had similar pain but not as bad or for as long and always just walked it off. I have noticed in the past when I was doing patient care on my knees treating a patient I would sometimes get a pain in this area (I thought it was a cramp) and could not stay in that position. It also hurts when I cough or clear my throat. I have had 4 knee surgeries (2 on each knee--left side acl replacement and the right acl needs replacing or knee replacement) and one rotator cuff surgery and need the other one done. My point is I know my body mechanics are far from correct. I know this is long but I tried to give a background. Thanks, Mike

The Dr. I went to was not my regular Dr. who I am not happy with (a long story--they found a spot on my lungs after I passed out during my fire dept physical and he just kept saying it was nothing--almost yelling at us--my Mom and here two brothers died of cancer and here 3rd brother beat stage 4 cancer and my dad's sister had cancer and my Father-in-law died of cancer so we have a painful history with cancer. We just thought he and the nurse should have handled it better. Anyway when I called for an aptmt because I could not walk they said they c/n get me in for over a week so I went to someone else in the office.

And what do you want to know -- if your doctor is wrong?

It's a long shot for me to contradict your doc who a) knows your history, b) has made a physical exam, and c) has read your xrays.

Degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) of the spine is common in many people and a result of aging. It is usually associated with degenerative disc disease that can cause shooting pains down the leg (usually ending at the knee) and into the buttocks.

My bet is on your doctor's diagnosis.
