severe pain in right butt cheek

Hi i am 20 years old and have 2 kids and 1 who is about 13 weeks in the making. Right about the time i got pregnant i started experiencing pain in my right butt cheek. It doesnt fan out or anything it is just in that one spot and its gotten bad. to start with it was bareable. but today it got like 500 times worse. sitting is horrible standing is bad and laying down... as long as im on my back and dont try to move im ok for about 30 minutes. the pain was so bad tho that i couldnt even get outta bed to goto the bathroom.. my husband had to help me and i was in tears the whole time because it felt like someone had a knife in my butt and was twisting it. i dont believe that this pain is due to the sciatic nerve because the pain is not in my back and has not shot to my legs at all. its just in the center of my butt cheek. if anyone can give me suggestions on what this could be i would really appreciate it so i know what to ask my doctor to check for if he doesnt do it anyway.

Hi Redneckmama,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum of MedHelp. I am so sorry to hear about your pain. I suffer from the same type of pain and have the same symptoms as you describe and more. Ouch! I think you are having pain in your sciatic nerve.

It is fairly common that during child bearing and child birth a woman can experience SIJ (sacroiliac joint) problems. During pregnancy hormones are released in the woman's body that allows ligaments to relax. This prepares the body for childbirth. Relaxation of the ligaments holding the SI joints together allows for increased motion in the joints and can lead to increased stresses and abnormal wear. The additional weight and walking pattern associated with pregnancy also places additional stress on the SI joints.

Sandee is correct. The sciatic nerve is large and runs from your spine down through your buttocks. It is located very close to the SIJ. The sacroiliac joints (SIJ) are formed by the connection of the sacrum and the right and left iliac bones.

Your SIJ may be "out" and require manipulation either by a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) which I highly suggest or a very good chiropractor. Or your SIJ may be highly inflamed. There is treatment for your pain and this condition. I would not wait as the longer this goes untreated the more likely it is to become chronic as is the case with mine. Again I suggest you consult with a DO as they are very familiar with this condition.

In the mean time I find that ice, rest, NSAID's and warm baths can help relieve the pain. Though heat can feel "good" for short periods it can increase the inflammation in the joint (by bringing blood and increasing fluids to the joint and surrounding structures) and actually make your pain worse. Sitting is the worse position followed by standing. Sometimes sitting indian style for 3-5 minutes will pull the pressure off the SIJ and help relieve pain. When laying down I position my leg bent at the knee and allow it to fall slightly outward towards the mattress and than I support it with pillows. I have learned to try various positions until I find one that relieves the stress on the SIJ. I maintain that position for several minutes and keep returning to it through out the day.

Best of luck to you. Please let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your next update. If you have any additional questions feel free to post them or you may send me a PM. Take care and rest. Tuck

Sounds like sciatica. The sciatic nerve runs from your back, through the muscle in your butt & down your leg. When the butt muscle gets tight it pinches the nerve & can hurt in the leg too. Try a heating pad. Always ice after heat. The heat will make the muscles swell, which in turn can increase the pinching on the nerve that's causing that pain.
Watch how you sleep on your side, the position that won't inflame the sciatica is this: keep your bottom leg straight and only bend your upper leg. Support your upper leg completely from knee to foot on a bolster or pillows that keep it at *least* as high as your hip, parallel to the bed. If it angles downwards, that will pinch the nerve. Be sure to switch sides.
I understand this is very common with pregnant woman. I am not pregnant but have these pains too and the heat and pillows help.

Sorry, I don't have a clue, but it does sound like nerve pain to me. When you were pregnant something pushed on a nerve and got it inflamed, maybe? Just be persistent with your doctor and make him get to the bottom of your pain (no pun intended)! Some times doctors are too slow to react because they think the patient is over reacting. Good luck.
