severe pain on opening mouth fully and headache

Hi, I am 28 yrs old.  I have been having pain behind my right ear on opening my mouth fully for about 2 weeks now.  I do not see any redness or swelling surrounding the jaw or ear, the pain seems to be internal.  I have no problem with my teeth or gums either.  When I try to open my mouth fully, the pain is very severe and also, I have headache, the pain is near the eyebrow and behind my neck.  I have on and off fever and chills and also nauseousness and dizziness sometimes.  My hearing in the right ear is normal and no infection either.  Please let me know exactly what it is related to and what doctor shud i seek if needed?

I have the symptoms. If Dentist open my mouth and hold it for a second, immediately I feel horrible pain in my upper neck or behind my head in both right and left side behind my ears. I got hit in my jaw when I was around 17 and I can hear my jaw poppind and clicking. I am fifty now and the pain is chronicle. I must advice the dentist. I am soon to have a root canal and I am worried about it. I am going to tell the dentist anyway. I have also a migraine condition but is not related to that pain when my mouth is open. Also I have the condition of orthoarthritis. This pain is only when opening my mouth and also when laughing and having lot of fun. I must suspend laughing immediately.  Thanks for any support.

I think I would see a dentist first to see if there is any problem with your teeth. Sometimes when you have a tooth ache and it is infected it causes alot of pain all over. If your dentist clears you I would go see your family dr and go from there.
I hope you get better soon, mouth pain is the worse.

Welcome to the Pain Mangement Forum. I am sorry to hear about your pain and symptoms. Thank you for describing your pain and symptoms so well. Obviously we cannot tell you "exactly what it is related to" or tell you which exactly which physician you should consult. We can offer some suggestions.

Your question is really more related to general health rather than chronic pain. However  I will offer my suggestions and opinion before I encourage you to also post in another forum. I will return with some suggestions for another forum(s) that may be more appropriate for you questions or request that your post be relocated.

The above suggestions of TMJ, temporomandibular joint disease is a possibility. I do not wish to imply their opinions are incorrect.

Most concerning is your elevated temperature, chills and nausea. My concern would be do you have Mastoiditis. In the USA this is a fairly rare condition. It is an infection of the bone behind the ear, or from an enlarged lymph node. Mastoiditis is usually a result of a middle ear infection that is left untreated and spreads to the mastoid bones. You have all the symptoms other than redness and swelling behind your ear.  If you have this condition your PCP may be able to treat this, if not an ear, nose and throat specialist would be preferred.

I encourage you to seek a clinical examination asap. If you have an "internal" infection this can be serious and treatment needs to begin promptly. If it were a virus one would think that after two weeks it would be clearing.

I am not trying to frighten you but this could be serious condition. In the same breath I must say that it could be a nasty virus that is just taking its time running it course. At any rate please consult with a medical provider asap.

I will be very interested to learn what you discover. Please keep us updated. I hope this this will resolve quickly once you seek treatment and that you will be feeling much better, very soon. We hope to hear of your progress.

hello, you could have tmj-temporomandibular joint disease-it does cause dizziness, headaches, pain in and around the ear, pain in the jaw and jaw clicking and popping. there are some good articles on the internet they give you more symptoms and info about it. i am not a dr-- i do not know about fever-chills and throwing up. with that it could  be something else. sounds like you may need to see a dr and let him or her decide what is going on. good luck and hope you feel better soon. god bless-kbe234

I would like to welcome you the Pain Management forum.  As you already know we are a community of chronic pain patients.  I wish there were a doctor at least monitoring this forum but there is not.  But we do offer support, advice and friendship to other chronic pain patients.

I am very sorry you're having this pain.  It sounds awful.  We do have a member here who has similar symptoms.  She should be on later on so do check back.  She'd be able to give you better answer than I.
