I recieved an injevtion to l4-s 1 then several to my si joint. The injections made me worse I suffer from severe pain bladder dysfuction and my legs go dead and give out. After I told my pain management doctor I got worse he dismissed me with no referrals. What can be done. I am desperatw for help. Ive been an emergency room rn for 14 years and can barely work now
Reading your post is heartbreaking to say the least. I hear your pain and understand the frustration.
I have been to hundreds of doctors over time., Yes some dismissed me and I got angry. It took a long time to find a doctor who really cared. I did some research on line and checked out an orthopedic doctor. I was told by many a doctor that an operation COULD leave me paralyzed. That was not an option for me. I have worked in the medical field also and know there are answers out there.
The orthopedic surgeon did a bone graft for my spinal stenosis in my neck. Two weeks later he did my lumbar spine with scraping some of the bone and eventually I had a rod put in. I liked the honestly of this doctor and learned to trust him.
5 years later, i had to have the rod removed due to nerve impingement by the same surgeon that I trusted. Yes, I developed scar tissue but that was the worse part of my surgery. At least I am not paralyzed.
I have gone to many a pain management team and still searching. Found a doctor who does sport medicine with Botox injections which helped my pain issues. Getting a lot of shots but it helps. No more steroid injections for me. Developed too many problems and not enough relief.
So far the shots I am getting help but still getting to know the doctor, He is not always forthcoming about what he gives me and we both need to work on his bedside manner but that will come in time, I will hope, but at least he gives me treatment without the drugs and I like the service, staff and attention to listening to his patients.
KEY: finding a doctor who listens to his patients.
Research on line to find a doctor who specializes in your area of pain. Call the office and ask information. Pro active is the way to go when you have to 'train' a doctor.
As an RN, you know that doctors are trained by the nurses and you are the best teacher to do this.
Keep yourself focused and go forth to teach.
Good luck with your quest.
That doctor that "dismissed"you simply shouldn't be practicing medicine. Unfortunately, you probably signed a paper that lists all the things that can happen, etc. That's why the doctor dismissed you, because he "legally" could. you became a "problem patient" to him. A reputable doctor would have been compassionate, telling you that these things happen sometimes, and that we will try everything we can to help you, etc. Was your injection done using flouroscopy at least? If not, then you could have a case against him, especially with the way you were treated when you told of a problem. Regardless of that idiot, you will have to find a good doctor to help you. They are out there, as the Madman can attest. Go to your PCP and start all over again on your search for a good pain specialist. Remember, the "squeeky wheel gets the grease"! You have to be an advocate for your self for a change. I wish you the best of luck.
That you for your input and advice. I feels good to have someone listen. Yes it was done under flouroscopy. And I totally understand what you are saying and have taken that route. Funny thing is one my journey to find another doctor through my suffering and dont get me wrong, I have been on vicoden for 3 yrs and they mske me sick to my stomach, mornings are very hard to get up and tomove around, I found myself with no doctor, no meds, in extreme pain so I called this md that dismissed me, spoke to office manager desperate for some relief , asked for a rx to get me through, and this was only after seeing a workmans comp md, having a independent medical exam and having another appt with yet another md in weeks, so I wasmt just sitting around not looking or trying to obtain help. The md that dismissed me said no I can nir give you a rx I no longer participate in your care, so I politely took the office manager thank you for your assistance and please let doctor know he will have to answer in court one day for what he has done to me and hung up. To my surprise that same doctor called first thing the next day to say im sorry for what your going through pkease dont be drpressed then went on to say , ive had back surgery to and kniw how hard it could be (never saying this to me wgen I was his patient) he then filled my script and I never spoke to him again. So tell me do you believe now I have a case? This has been so frustrating especially as a nurse and being on the other side and being treated this way. Thank you agsin for your time, it makes me have hope and strength to continue on as my own advocate
Now my mind is racing. I also neglected to tell you of the one si injection procedure I went in for. I became upset just prior to getting on table for procedure I began to cry only with complete exhaustion and tired if having procedures. I remember getting wheeled in to the procedure room crying. The anesthesiologist began to yell at me saying why are you crying, we are nit going to be able to do procedure she looked up at doctor then immediately put me to sleep I woke up not being able to breath coughing like crazy. The procedure was not completed. I was told my oxygen desatated and they had to flip me on table and begin bagging me. I wwnt home woke up with bruises to neck and jaw swollen and so sore I couldnt move. My 3 level cervical fusion surgery that went great and recovered well from now causes me daily pain that I still sleep with ice packs daily. I always wore a cervical collar to procedures but forgot it that particular day .md was aware cause I askedthey were suppose to get me a soft collar t9 wear for procedure but they never did. I called md next day to asked what happened and he told me you were nit breathing well had to be flipped on table and bagged until 02 sat came up. He said I wouldn't be surprised if you had bruising. So I knew they were rough with me. Thats when this nightmare began. I did go back some time later after healing to have anither injection because it was not completed and the last one sent me over the edge the pain is now so much more intense then it was and that is when he dismissed me. Again thank you for your advice, time and input.
