Hi Harley201,
my last post is somewhat wrong and I meant to send it to you not zoyie. Sorry about that. I read more on Tramadol and also on narcotics etc. the term narcotics is a vague term that is used to decribe anything that makes you sleep, numb, etc. but as for legal terms narcotics are morphine, heroine, and other illegal drugs. As for Tramadol being a "narcotic" is does make you sleepy or numb pain etc. and works on the opiate receptors. So it has narcotic like properties but isn't on the list of illegal narcotic drugs. It is an analgesic. It does give you addition so keep that in mind. As I said I took it for a month and it took me a week to get past withdrawal. Hope this helps,

Tramadol is not an narcotic. It has narcotic like properties and acts like one. Yes it is addictive. I was on it for about a month. It took me about a week to get over the withdrawal.

Actually it is a narcotic. It's an opioid. It also acts as an SSRI. From Wikipedia:

"Tramadol hydrochloride (Ultram, Tramal) is a centrally acting opioid analgesic. Tramadol possesses weak agonist actions at the μ-opioid receptor, releases serotonin, and inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine"

It is not considered a narcotic but some people can become addicted to it but I think that is just a physical addiction and the doc can get you off by gradually lowering the dosage.  I took it for years and really liked it because it was not a narcotic but it can effect your liver and that is what happened to me, so I had to go off of it.  Going off was no problem especially since they replaced it with a different pain med.  If you are going to be taking it on a regular basis I would recommend (and your doc should too) that you get your liver function test done periodically to make sure it is having no effect on it.  I took it for years before it started bothering my liver and once I went off of it my liver functions went back to normal.  I hope this helps and good luck if you or anyone you know decides to use this for pain management.
