what is codene?

Can anyone tell me what codene (spelling??) is?

I had dental work done yesterday and can barely open my  mouth today. I just called my dentist.  He said he was calling me codene in...then he asked if i ever took it. I said no...the only pain killers I have ever taken for dental work was vicodin and percocet.  He then said oh ok...consider it called in.

Assuming he calls me in codene...what is it???? Is it a pill? I thought it was cough syrup? I am confused.

Thanks :)

Actually, up until today, I couldn't get to the pain forum on MH. My work had it blocked but somehow I got to it today!

I have a constant, non stop, nagging pain now for about 2 years.....it won't go away. EVER. it has cost me lost of money and it makes me cry sometimes.....i went to pain management and they told me they can't treat boyfriends. LOLOLOL OK, that was really dumb but i thought it was funny for a second!

HAHA.  well, actually tho i do have severe TMJ and tons of pain because of that. And migranes and neck/back pain from it.  So, I am for sure going to utilize this forum as well!

Thanks again!

To Lovemypillhead:

I have to tell you that on occasion when I have read some of the postings in the Substance Abuse forum, some of the members seem bothered by anything and it seems that they can go on and on about nothing. Tuck is so right when she said there was alot said about nothing. LOL....Like I said, if you ever have a question then post it here. You will not face the harassment you did in the Substance Abuse Forum. We are a close knit group and welcome new members. Take care,
Molly

Hi Again,

Boy, everyone had a lot to say about nothing!! I am sorry that you encountered some hostility. It is true that the members of the Substance Abuse Forum are struggling with opiates and it is not the place to post a narcotic/pain question. But you did not know that and therefore I apologize for all the confusion. I now can understand their responses. I thought you were from the Substance Abuse Community. At any rate I am glad you were redirected to us. I think finally I am not confused...LOL. I will probably will be later.

Vicodin is not codeine, though there is some relationship between the two. Vicodin is hydrocodone with tylenol. There are different strengths of Vicodin and it is a good pain reliever. It is a opiate/narcotic. If the tooth is extracted without complications your pain should begin to diminish in 24-48 hours. If you tooth breaks or is connected to your mandible than your dentist will most likely order you Percocet (oxycodone), which is a bit stronger than hydrocodone. However hydrocodone works better for me than oxycodone. Every one's system is different. I doubt you will be able to talk for 8-12 hours straight post-extraction, with or without pain medication. You will most likely have some swelling. I have found that I felt a whole lot better after the extraction than I did with the darn tooth pain. I hope that will be true for you.

Good luck and please let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your update. Peace, Tuck

He actually called me vicodin in......

I have NEVER had an abuse problem.  It's funny tho, I took the vicodin and it really didnt help me. I have always sworn I have a strong tolerance to pain killers....even thought i probably shouldn't because i have never been on anything long term.....or that strong..but, for some reason pain killers don't touch me that much. They are just regular vicodin....and i took 2 and it did nothing to help me.  I go back in the dentist today....matter of fact, i have to call my dentist NOW.  He is gonna pull the tooth.  If the vicodin isnt strong enough to help me with the pain BEFORE the tooth gets extracted, would a safe assumption be that it wont help afterwards?  If so, is it out of line for me to ask for something strong?  God, I don't want him thinking im just trying to get pills or something.........but, i really am concerned about that.

PLUS, see my job...........i talke 8-12 hours a day, non stop.  So, i can't just take the day off and relax and not talk.  I have to work.  I have to talk.  Maybe im being paranoid...

Hi Lovemypillhead,

I am not offended by you or your comment. I was just confused...but some times I spend half the day confused...LOL.

I'm going back to your original question. What is codeine? First did he actually prescribe you codeine? If you told him you have only taken Vicodin or Percocet and he said, "Consider it done" than what did he end up prescribing for you? You never mentioned Tylenol III, as someone described. Codeine can be prescribed without Tylenol. It is the one of the weakest narcotics on the market. I beleive only Darvon is weaker.  Either one will do little for moderate to severe pain.

No one likes to suffer with pain, especially when it can be controlled. I wish you well. Again please let me know if I have answered your question. Peace, Tuck (P.S. I didn't know there was another Tuck on MH, I am Tuckamore)

If it is not effective in reducing your pain than you need to make another call to your dentist. I do not know if you have a problem with substances or not. So my recommendations are based strictly on pain issues, not abuse issues.

lovemypillhead:

I'm sorry if I offended you. I didn't realize that MH would move your question to the pain forum. It is a legit question for our forum and it's a good question. I was rather shocked that MH would move the entire post over here. Please don't feel that you can't post in the pain forum or any other forum. I was just as shocked reading all the comments as you. I feel that Asvig was not right with her comment to you. You should be able to post it here or there. Please accept my apoligy. Have a wonderful Holiday Season,

Thanks girl

I am about 2 seconds from just reading from now on and not posting on MH. I ask a question NO DIFFERENT then other people on here............actually, yeah--it is different. My codeine question was far from uncool and wrong.  I am gonna stand up for myself here.  I asked a simple question. People come  on MH and talk about how bad they messed up and go into GREAT detail about how they snorted an 80 over the weekend and they don't get in trouble. Their post doesnt get moved.  Or, i have an opinion about why pregnant girls shouldnt do pills and the whole thread gets removed...sorry, that makes no sense either...i  would love for a preg  girl who is taking drugs to come on medhelp, read one of my post and think to herself "OMG lovemypillhead is mean  and wow i cant believe she and other people would think that of me doing pills, pregnant".  Then, in time, she would realize it isnt about being mean. It's about the betterment of her baby and she'd stop doing the pills.

But now, MH moves my post and people on here and like blamming me?? ANd apologizing to the pain forum.  What???

You're confused?!  How do u think I feel?????!!!!!!!!!!

I posted my question in the substance abuse forum.  I was getting some answers....Next think I know i was told my question was "uncool". I asked what codeine was....and apparently that question was deemed inappropriate on that forum because people, there, are trying to get off pills and that question may cause them to relapse....

So, medhelp MOVED this topic to this forum, pain management.

I didnt move anything or copy anything.  Mollyrae apologized to this forum because of me/my post....altho i didnt do anything wrong.  Molyrae needs to apologize to me and blame medhelp for it, i guess? I dont know. I still dont agree with or rather, understand why, my post had to be moved.   (as i stated above, i need a degree to post on here)

Also Tuckamore, thanks for the help :)  I am glad I didn't offend you. I seem to do that lately.

I'm not a member of the pain management forum.I belong to the substance addiction forum,so forgive me if anyone here feels like I'm speaking out of place.I just wanted to say in lovemypillheads defense, that she is telling the truth about the post being moved.SHE didn't move it.MH did,so she had no control over the responses that were given form the substance abuse forum still being on this thread.

seriously, i am so confused.  u said for me to be careful about posting....like i am dumb founded as to what u are talking about?  i didnt copy anything. i originally posted this god awful question about what codeince is and apparently medhelp moved it from that forum to this forum.

i just logged on this morning and saw it was moved and saw these posts.

i never copied anything.

why would u be apologizing to the pain forum?

I'm an addict pillhead, as you know and I'm not in the least offended. Who better yo ask than an addict, recovering or not. Codeine is mild totally different than hydrocodone. Two totally different drugs. Tylenol #3 has 30mg of codeine and hydrocodone goes up to 10mg. I think some people in this forum needs to quit being so sensitive. If your offended with someone's honesty then quit reading their post.

I am totally confused!!!! I thought that this was posted on the Pain Management Forum. Mollyrae you will have to explain this better to the dummy, me. I thought if it was copied it showed as a copy.

And Lovemypillowhead if you have questions about pain medications or you still have a questions about codeine please let us know if the Pain Management Forum and someone will be happy to respond.

Tooth pain can be horrible. I am sorry you are experiencing it. You are correct, codeine is not a very strong or effective pain med. Good luck to you.

I want to apologize to the pain forum for the Substance Abuse forum spilling over from the original poster. I think the poster copied the entire post.

To Lovemypillhead:

Please be consious of what your copying in the future. You only need to copy your original question. Thank you,
Mollyrae

I'm really confused about your last post Avis - just for the record, I'm not starting drama - I just need to ask this question: If people on the forum are having a hard time reading posts about pain meds then... #1. Why don't they stop reading posts about people taking pain meds? #2. Why are they on an addiction forum where 99% of people are here to get clean off of pain pills?? Alot of posters here have been clean for awhile, but ALOT of posts are from people starting a detox, going thru a detox, or starting/doing a taper.... If any posts concerning someone (still) taking pain meds are going to be redirected to another forum - then what's the point of the Substance Abuse forum even existing?? And quite honestly - if reading a post like this particular one here causes someone to relapse or think about relapsing... then that person/people are obviously not very strong in their recovery. I'm not saying that to be mean or hurtful - it's true.

Well, Traycee, u need a degree too then! LOL

Thanks everyone for the advice.....and/or what to expect for pain.  I am not  a baby when it comes to pain actually.  My first root canal - I was 4 years old.  And, the nerve wasn't dead so I felt it all. Ahh gives me chills NOW just thinking about it.

But, for some reason as I get older I get scared of pain more so then I ever use to.  So, I didn't know what to expect or what to take or what to do.

And yeah, Catt, you all I do trust. Some i know in real life. Others have been there and done that.....the information on medhelp is quite useful at times.

Appreciate it :)
