6 yr old tantrums

my six year old son has been given 3 verbal warning at after school adventure club. Not listening, running away from the area, now hitting the instructor. He usually can not say what the problem was, but one time it was because he was told to wait for another student to return from the bathroom before he could go (I believe he just wanted to leave the area, and did not have to use the bathroom immediately). He often gets angry at home and throws or hits something, most often a time out will solve the problem at home. How can we help him with his anger... He has been told it's normal to get angry, but he needs to handle how he reacts after being told something he does not like to hear.
