7 year old scared to do things alone

My 7 year old is scared to go anywhere by herself at night- downstairs, her room, etc.,. She is a very independent child in most areas and I don't understand why we are having the issues with fear. I have talked to her and am not sure why she is suddenly scared to do anything by herself. Is this normal? Does anyone have any suggestions.

She still insists on sleeping with my husband and I or her 6 yr. old sister, and when she sleeps over at my parents' house, she wants to be in their bed with them.
She doesn't care about me telling her that all her friends sleep in their own rooms.
If asked to do so, she gets worked up into such a crying fit that she starts to cough and then throws up!
Anyone?
